Ipod Classic Woes

Ok, me and my buddy where going to transfer some music from Ipod to Ipod, he prefers Media Monkey so I went ahead and installed it, plugged in his ipod classic 80gig and Media Monkey crashed.......along with his Ipod.

Upon resetting the Ipod with the Menu+Centerbutton trick his Ipod would display a Red X, which is an obvious sign to hardware failure. Most likely the hard drive...... At some point following the guides of some online forums and the apple support pages we discovered basically you can unjar the hard drive with a few taps, possibly the needle so to say has gotten jammed.

Now it no longer shows the Red X, it says Itunes needs to restore the ipod. We don't care about the music as much, he already has that backed up on his computer. Itunes fails in restoring the ipod everytime, reports "Error The Ipod could not be restored (1439)," and it is the latest Itunes and such. We are using an original Ipod USB cable, no 3rd party cables. USB drivers seem to be fine, My ipod responds and everything perfectly on the same computer and others. We even tried the ipod and itunes on another computer and to no avail.

We've had windows 7 reformat the drive to both exFAT and NTFS with typical default settings. Itunes reports the same error everytime. Although you could access it through windows as a normal exterior drive.

The computer that crashed it so to say is Windows XP with the latest updates (SP3)
We even tried it on my Netbook with Windows 7 Starter with latest updates.
We are using Itunes version 9.0.2
We where installing Ipod firmware version 1.1.2 (i think that is the latest version)
My Ipod is a 1st generation of Ipod Video, classic
My friend's, 6th generation Ipod classic

Can anyone assist?

On a second note, we need to reformat the drive of the ipod to FAT32.
For some reason 3rd party software can never touch it. Either just a failure or it says that it is write protected.
Windows only allows us to reformat it to NTFS.

We tried earlier versions of Itunes and it still fails.

So far no progress..............

anyways an update...
The ipod is working again!! Ultimately had to give it a hard tap on startup to unjar the hard drive again. Itunes was able to restore it afterwards, but we are still unable to reformat the drive to FAT32, right now its NTFS.....and i guess its making read and sync times slower from what my friend has said. His belief is that the reserve partition on the drive has become corrupted and thats causing the slower read/sync time.........Personally i think its the format, it wouldnt make sense to have the reserve partition slowing it down like that........

We can reformat it to exFAT. Would ya'll believe that would be any faster than NTFS?
