replace aftermarket n64 joystick with psx problems

ok, I desoldered the joy stick from the playstation controller board, and when I went to replace the pots on my aftermarket controller with the psx's assembley, I get barely any movement at all. Yes, the aftermarket n64 controller used pots, I am trying to replace it because the joystick broke off. can anyone give me insight? is it different currents? ranges? what?!!? [sorry if I ramble, or seem demanding, I get frustrated and I wana play zelda!

You have to make sure you hook up the same exact points. Like on my N64 controller it looks like this on the bottom of the joystick Pcb:

: Say the left 3 pins from bottom are 1,2,3 and the top 3 pins are 4,5,6 . On my N64 controller pins 2 and 4 are connected together and go to the 4 pin wire coming from the joystick Pcb. And 1 and 5 are connected together and go to another pin on the 4 pin wire. Then pin 3 goes to another of the 4 pin wires and pin 6 goes to the last.

So when you hook up the PSX joystick you need to make sure those same set of pins (2,4 and 1,5) are hooked together and the solo pins are solo. Then they need to be wired to the 4 pin connector in the same order.

Make sense?

*That was just an example from memory, the pins connected together and solo will probably be different on your joystick,

my controller is an aftermarket one, it has 2 wires coming to each pot, and I just substituted the psx's pots in for the 64's, and yes, I understood what you were talking about

thats what I'm to wonder, I'm going to be hanging out with my uncle today who knows a lot more about this kinda stuff, not that I don't but he has the guts to rip apart an xbox and fix the E78 error by himself. I was gunna bring the multimeter out last night but it got too late and I ended up crashing.

No. Typically, any Playstation controller has different pot values than what are in 3rd party N64 controllers. Gamecube and Xbox ones are the best to use, because they can be used the way they are.

I checked with the multimeter and the n64 pot is reading ~40 and the psx is only reading ~4. Maybe I'll find a junked xbox controller and try again with that, I don't have the heart to tear apart my gamecube ones :'(

Yeah, I remember now. The playstation pots are 10k and the GC/N64/Wii pots are 500k. You could take a cap from a PS joystick and put it on a GC pot, though.

edit: actually I think GC pots are 50k. Either way, they're different.

I am pounding doors down looking for junked gc or xbox controllers. I would go to the pawn shop, but it recently burnt down, and the only other one within 40 miles is Pawn America, and they charge too much, so for now I'll be calling in favors for controllers.
