Help me design an entertainment center!

Post by ghosstt »

Title says it all. I know a lot of you guys here build/have built your own furniture before, and now I'm joining the club. I'm gonna be creating an entertainment console for my room, but I'm not really sure where to start.

List of what I know will be on it so far:

32'' LCD Television
Xbox 360
Marantz 2330 Receiver Unit
A bunch of games
A yorx m2677 cassette/record player (used for the record player, going to be upgraded to a better one sometime soon, mostly likely just a stand alone)

Whats to come:
Possible original ps3
More audio equipment (Full size EQ, amp, etc.)
Other

I really want it to look sleek and modern, with everything having its own sort of place. Something I thought would be good, is to have it easily changable, in a modular type way, so If I want to add something, I can just move it, move the shelf up, and its done. If I want to remove something, just take the shelf out, and its done.

Some cool features:
A slide-out drawer/shelf for the record player, so you can see the front display, and slide it out to put a record in.
An Integrated iPod dock connected to my 360. This way, I can just plug it into the unit as a whole, which should look cool, and still be able to listen to my music from it.
Making the receiver flush with the front.

It has a 3/8ths inch lip on the front plate that I'd have fit into a groove, so it could sit nice and flush.

Gonna put up a possible rough sketch in a bit. Any ideas, comments, or sketches of your own are appreciated.

Can you give some rough dimensions on things?

Put a big radius on the front so it's not flat. Put brushed aluminum strips on the edge (You can find plastic strips with a very thin aluminum layer already)

That one isn't actually mine, but I'm getting the same model, close condition. It should be here any day now, and I can't wait.

@marshall: I think a rounded radius would look sweet, and the aluminum would probably go well with the rest of the room. I'm gonna be using mostly MDF, so it's easier to make new shelves, add them, change them, etc.
