GBC cartridge question

I have a pokemon red game :D which has a dead internal battery :( , and i was wondering if it could be possible to custimize it so the game saves onto flash memory, without the battery...

Short answer: forget it. Just replace the battery.

I didn't think batteries for Red would be dying already. I've heard that the ones in G+S die because of the internal clock, but Red? I'm surprised. Especially since my Gold still works fine. 8) But yeah, replacing the battery would be a lot easier than doing anything else.

whats with GBC games having batteries? what the purpose and what happens if the battery dies, how do you know?

saves. they work with batteries. when it runs out, saves get deleted and you can't save anymore

That's kinda weird. My Pokemon Blue game stopped saving just a few years after I got it. Maybe I just caught missingno one too many times..

Another question, are there flash carts with no batterys that are fully functional just like an original red?

No, they need the battery for the Real Time Clock.

get a 256 k fram chip from ramtron, then swap it with the sram in the game cart.
then you dont need a battery.
u might also have to do a little bit of rewiring, to get the pinnouts right.

basically old game boy games need a small amount of power to keep its saves, not much though, like how a watch can go a couple of years without needed a new battery. Some old arcade machines needed power to keep a save too, all the high scores would be wiped if they were ever turned off.
