running a wii with a battery
Hey Im planning on making a portable gamecube and thought it would be a lot smaller to use a wii and then I could just use its case. I was just wondering if anyone knows what kind of battery I could use to power it.

Li-ions or Li-pos are the way to go.

You obviously don't read the forums at all. The question was asked by me, and awnsered just a few topics below this one.

You need: 11.1v Battery. Whether its: Ni-Mh, Ni-Cd, Li-po, li-ion, lead acid, etc.
Li-po is expensive, but small. Ni-Mh is reasonably priced and medium sized. Lead Acid is the cheapest, but also the biggest and somewhat annoying to charge and discharge.
I suggest Ni-Mh, but thats me. I prefer them.

Make a connector that can be used by both of them.
Like, take the + and - of the battery, and wire it up to a MALE plug that can fit into the wii's power plugin. Then attach it, and there you go. Mind you, to do this you'd probably have to buy another wii power brick and cord, just to cut the MALE head/adapter off of it.
Then ofcourse, you'd need to do the same thing to the battery charger, except with a FEMALE adapter/head.

Are you sure that a Wii can power on with 11.1v? Has this been tested?The wii will power on at the lowest of 12.1 volts but if powered on will go as low as 9.3 volts before it stops working.

BTW, You made that topic trying to figure out how to use the Wii without a sensor bar. Why would he comb through that topic looking for battery answers?

to be fair, i woudlnt have looked in that topic for answers. All teeh flamingz iz hurting mah brainz.
I have run the wii from a 3 cell lipo, a 12 V lead acid batgtery and a 12 V nicad ( Havent got an nimhs but they are very simialr to nicads as far as discharging goes). The lipo (or lion) is the best option here, a nice fresh 3200 mah lipo will theoretically run the wii for a few hours. Nicads and nimhs arent a greta idea for the wii as although they hold a fair enough charge, the terminal voltage srops very quickly as they are safe to dischrage to low voltages, i tried this recently and only got 5 minutes on a 1700 mah 12 V pack before it dipped below ( a 24 volt pack and a large regualtor is something im looking into now so stay tuned
). The sla is IMO the best option here if you dont want to, cant or cant afford to use lipos ( im not allowed, my parents are terrified they are going to burst in to flames at evry second, despite them owning ipos, phones and other lipo/lion using devices...) i get 50 minutes gameplay from a 2.1 ah sla battery fully charged before the wii reliably cuts out around 9 volts (i alwyas turn it off at 9.5 in fear of corruption). This was also running a screen drawing just over an amp and a few other usb accesories. Your porbably thinking sla batteries are too big, Ill post a pic in a minute of the sla i use in my being builtwii laptop. its 35 mm thick and is just the right length to fit in the vody of the laptop, it was very cheap, very small and perfect

very much depends on the size of the screen, the psone screen will draw (if i rmemebr right) under half an ampwith the led mod. but a 17 inch widescreen modified to run from 12 5 and 3.3 colt lines will draw around 5-6 amps. If you tell me your applicatgionj forthis project ill try and suggest a screen.

Use 3 and keep a multimeter on there and if it goes below 9.5 volts , turn it off, any lower will cause damage to the pack. The wii runs fine or 12.8 volts, the highest fullycharges voltage a 11.1 V 3 cell lipo can achive.

okay so i can use 11.1v, and 6 cells for double the capacity. where would that put me with a wii and an unmodded psone screen?
and why would it be bad if it drops below 9.5v? what would be damaged?

lipos don't like being discharged below 3 volts per cell, to be same always recharge them before they reach that. Unless you short them, discharging a lipo very very very rarely makes it do anything bad like explode. Your not planning to use nicads or nimhs in parallel with lipos are you? Thats not a good idea as is and don't even think of charging them like that.

i was thinking of wiring a battery something like this

each one is a 3.7v 4800mAh lipo cell
and you said that a wii will shut off when it gets down to 9.3v. is it safe enough to just run the batteries until the wii shuts down, and then charge them directly after?
