I personally don't know why somebody would buy movies on UMD, its so limited, if they made UMD players for the TV then sure, but otherwise youre stuck to the 3.5" or whatever screen.

Takes the thinking and requirement of a computer out of it. Yeah I agree that its just a stupid gimmick. Chances are to push UMD further Sony will likely add a dock to the PS3 so you can veiw movies that are on them through the PS3 on the TV. Or made a card slot that fits in the 3.5" bay of computers.

Well I think sony is seeing this as the new and improved walkman that everybodys gonna buy. They really are expecting this to be something BIG that everyone will accept as the new GameBoy/walkman.
Depending on how well the units sell the whole movie deal thing could be either a gimmick or pure genius.

Well, if they make a UMD device for the TV then it's pretty female of the dog species' because the disks are so much smaller than DVDs, and people will like that. But at the moment its a 'why would I buy a movie I can only watch on the small screen?' kind of thing.

That's kind of the sacrifice you make when you get a portable, unless they make a peripheral for playing the stuff on the big screen (Super Gameboy, Gameboy Player).
To say the least, PSP owners can only hope the PS3 has a UMD slot.

Uh... what? The market Sony is going for with the PSP doesn't play games? Then why would they buy a portable gaming device? Anyway, the market Sony are shooting for is the young adult market which they so successfully sold the PSX and PS2 to - so there must be a market for games in that age group.
More on topic, I can't see myself ever wanting to watch films on the go so badly I'd pay for a PSP+UMDs. They take to long and I'd never have enough spare time without having a bigger screen nearby. Not to mention the hardware probems that have been reported...
