Can you use DDR2 RAM in your motherboard? If you can I'd say go for it. DDR3 isn't worth the jump (not yet at least). Also, upgrade the hard drive, I'm running 160gb and hate it. I can fill it up with a few steam games and my music and videos, way too small. The graphics card is good, I have an 8800GT (same thing practically) and it's pretty phenomenal for everyday gaming. Also, get a DVD burner unless you have one already, trust me.

Yeah I was gonna say get DDR2 ram, expecially with the processor you have, the DDR3 isn't gonna upgrade anything.
Also, get a dvd burner. They're cheap as crap, and worth it when you really need it.

nm is right. DDR3 is usually around the same price as DDR2 now. And seriously a 8800GT? I run a 7900GT and dam it feels old running modern games at 1440x900. I would not buy old tech for a new computer. There is no point to buying an out dated computer for new costs. I would pick up a ATi HD5750. Got your Dx11 gaming needs right there. Has much more horsepower then a old 8800GT. Remember the whole point of PC gaming is having a keyboard/mouse AND having better GFX then consoles.

What about overclocking? Could that really help the performance, or just a little bit?

Depends on how much you can overclock it and remain stable. Look into what CPUs have cores you can unlock. I think one of the reviews for your motherboard said it could unlock cores pretty easy. You might be able to get a cheaper CPU and make it faster than more expensive ones.

I've actually changed it up a bit.

now, I have a geforce 9800gt 1gb graphics card and an athlon II quad core propus(sp?) at 2.66 Ghz. my motherboard doesn't support DDR3, though

But there's no point in going with Vista now that 7 is out. That's like buying Windows ME after XP Home was released.

My opinion is that if you are going to be buying in the lower end of the gaming PC market, you should check a few overclocking, gaming, and PC forums. There are usually people who build new rigs ALL the time willing to sell their slightly older ones for a bargain when they upgrade.

I've seen AMD Quad Cores, with 2gb ram, videocard, and everthing you need (except monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc) go for $390ish on tigerdirect.
