My 360 GO

Hi, you may have seen my original thread (here http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=35130" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I have started buying bits now for the laptop, starting with the screen so here are the pics.

I bought a second hand el cheapo 15 inch lcd monitor, I hacked it up to run on a 5V and 12 V source. It pulls about 1.5 amps on the 12 V line and 0.8 amps on the 5 V line. Im guessing most of the 12 V power consumption goes to the inverter. The boards a very modular, the cable between the inverter and main board has been extended and now goes right across the back of the monitor. The inverter is thinner than the screen itself and only adds a bit to its width, The mainboard is a bit thicker than the screen, but acceptable after removing the vga plug. I borrowed my brothers 360 and vga cable and it works at under 15 mm . the top and bottom are mad eout of 3 mm sintra so all in all 21mm for the whole screen , not half bad eh ?

I went to my local game station and had a fairly long chat with the guy behind the counter about 360 arcades and everything cheap. I almost bought a 360 vga cable until i found an engadget article very clearly explaining the pinouts of the 360's arse. I took my dead ps2's composite and audio cable and sliced a section out if it, there are 3 shielded wires there so i used one each for red green and blue and just un shielded IDE cable for the h sync and v sync. Plugged it all in and whoa it worked first time !!!!
I have acnc machine at school and i get on well with the DT teacher so i should be getting the side pannels cut out soon. My main goal with this project is thin nes(?). Maybe im being too ambitiou but im aiming for an overall thickness of 71 mm.

anyway, i digress, here are the pics:

this pic is off the laid out parts, since this photo was taken i have extended the cable between the inverter and ma inboard


This pic is ff the mainboard, this has the very common genesis chip, it makes for a nice crisp display , just after i took this pic i plugged it all in and tested it out and almost had a heart attack when all i saw was coloured lines across the screen, if you look at the lcd connector you can see i didnt push it in all the way .


This pic is just fo the lcd itslef, its dual tube too but dual inverter . that on the bottom right hand corner is the connector on a battery pack for my combat robots.

It is clear that this screen was also supposed to run from a power supply, i would guess it would be a 12 volt power supply, all those missing components jsut to regulate a 5 volt 1 amp source ??, somethings fishy here.


OMGOMGOMGOMG , it vorks!!!!! , that toilet roll tube with wires coming out of it is my home made mini bass cannon, to enhance your pendulum experience, also good for cod 5 modern warfare 2

I've got a pretty much new (Jasper) xbox 360 that I'm going to use to build a 360 laptop, and I've got a 15 inch screen I can use, but the power supply is fried on the board. So I used 12V, 5V, and gnd from my 360 to try power it up, and it worked. I didn't try turning on my 360 at the same time due to the fear that I would fry something, but could I run the 360 and the screen off of just the 360s power? Or would I need two separate power cords?

sorry, I didn't waqnt to start a new thread, but at the sae time I didn't really want to hijack a thread. I just figured since you're working on a 360 laptop you might know.

Just kind of figured a new thread would be worthless if my project never really starts.

Im planning to use this as a bit of a build diary so i would appreciate it if you started a new thread .

In response to your question, No Although it may be ok on the 12 V line , the 360 needs every bit of 5 volts the power supply provides( if you use a regualtor to get 5 volts for the screen from the12v line this will most likely draw too much current from the 360 power supply,) so you will need a seperate psu, i would suggest a small atx power supply, anything about about 300 W should do and this will run the 360, and the screen and a few other bits n bobs lie speakers.

I would however try it as i may be wrong and if you do try and pull too much current through the 360 power supply then itwill turn off and give you an orange light, no harm done.
