Could I Use 5 regular 1.5V AA Batteries to power the project

My design requires 7.4V, however .1V shouldnt make much difference. Also, would I be able to use 6 1.2V rechargeable AA batteries?

I wouldn't suggest it as they won't last long, but yes. You can do either of those, the nimh rechargables will be better,

I tried this to check that the power to my portable was working once before my batteries arrived.

I got 5 minutes of playtime. Really you can't use AAs. Get a real battery.

Did you use alkaline AA's or "heavy duty"? I would have expected alkaline to last longer than that.

They were some fairly old NiMH batteries.
