N64 Gamepad complete disassembly

Post by thedoginthewok »

Hi
I have several old N64 Gamepads, that I want to clean. I have disassembled the gamepad, but the thing wich holds memory cards or other extensions is still in there. Now you maybe think thats not a problem, but I want to really make the pads look shiny and I want to clean them with hot water and dish liquid, and that spring in there could corrode because of getting wet.

Sorry if you dont understand my point, I am german.

I just want to know how to get that thing out of the controller. Thank You.

The electronics are completely out. It is only a spring. I really dont know how to explain this.

OH  . I dunno. does it look like it's removable? maybe you need to snap it out. I thought things like taht were normally unscrewableish.

I tried to push it in different ways but it doesnt seem to move and I dont want to break it, thats why I posted here.
I broke a lot of housings of my electronic "toys" because I just tried to push them apart (lol)

Sorry to bump this thread slightly, but I just wanted to let the OP know that I have washed quite a few N64 controller casings with no problems :)

I really dont think you can remove that spring, but what I usually do is wash the controller casing with warm soapy water, cleaning all the holes/crevices with cotton buds/q-tips, and then rinse the casing under plain water to remove any soap residue. Then I use some compressed air to blow out most of the water near the spring and then allow all the parts to dry in a warm place for a few days.

To be honest I think the spring is made out of a non-rusting metal any way?

I hope that helps :D

Thanks for the information. I would blow it dry with compressed air if i had compressed air xD.

I think i'll just try to clean them and use a hairdryer (with heat coil turned off) to get it completely dry.

You can buy cans of compressed air at computer stores or online, its really useful stuff to have around for cleaning out dust from PC's etc. If you buy some just remember to keep the can mostly upright when you use it because its full of liquid compressed air which will leak out if your tilt the can too much. Its better to move the item you want to spray than to tilt the can

...A hairdryer will probably work too though with the heat off, or on a very low setting 8)
