RAM Makes Me Wanna RAM My Head Into A Wall :-(

I know that ddr is faster than sd, but I barely run any heavy applications on my PCs, so my ones with sd ram work just as good as my one with ddr ram

I can't belive that my compuuter only has 256 of RAM! and i'm thinking about giving it more ram but i need 512

The key reason behind getting more ram for a system is that the ram you have in often inatiquet. Now if 256mb DDR is cutting it, its hardly a reason to upgrade to twice as much just becuase you feel the amount is too low. Hell my computer has 512, I've considered getting another 512 but with money and the fact that really the most demading thing I do is watch tv/videos/music and browse the web I dont need a big upgrade.

I have 768 in both my machines, works fine for just about everything. (including Warcraft 3, Call of Duty, Unreal Tournament 2004, Doom 3, etc...)

I have 1 gig of sdram and well, it is kicking some serious ass right now, got it cheap too, my computer is "homemade" only the stuff i like/want in it. My computer is flying, i would recommend sdram to anyone, anytime.

"SDRAM" is still slower than DDR. That is a fact, not my opinion. And the chipsets that support SDRAM are all slower than current DDR chipsets for other purposes. That is to say, if you upgrade to DDR there will be a performance difference.

I didn't say everyone NEEDED that performance difference. SDRAM is fine, in that it does its job. Up until 2004 I used PC133 exclusively on all of my systems. The only reason I changed to DDR was because
a) I needed a faster processor, and most of the cheaper upgrades required a speed-up of the front-side bus, so my PC133 wouldn't work.
b) SDRAM was already getting scarce.

All I was saying is that if you have a choice now between which to go with when building a new system, you'd be an idiot to go with PC133, when it costs more and provides less than PC3200. Unless, of course, you have some sitting around. Though chipsets supporting PC133 are getting really rare nowadays, so you're pretty much SOL. Heck, DDR2 is now considered a mainstream memory standard :/ I went looking for a PC133 mainboard to replace one of mine that died (an AthlonXP, so I needed a KT133A chipset). Cheap ones were unable to be found (and before someone says "Oh yeah, saw one on Pricewatch," I even ordered one and it turned out to be a different chipset (which doesn't help my opinion of Pricewatch vendors).

I agree that building PCs yourself is the best way to see performance. If you buy storebought, you're gonna be in pain, regardless of what they say you get. It doesn't help to have the fastest DDR RAM when RAM bandwidth is taken up by the onboard video. Plus OEMs are always looking to get the cheapest parts that let them say that you're getting something good (for example, they'll get the cheapest chipsets that support processor X, even though it makes processor X run slower than processor Y on a good chipset, and processor Y is slower).

And it's spelled "know-it-all." And I'm *paid* to know it all when it comes to this subject. So I'm glad I succeed

FDSMAN: If it's DDR, it only costs about $80 for 1GB now, on a typical day from a good vendor for good RAM. Probably costs about $130-$140 for the same quality PC133

256 ant so bad I went till just earleyer this year with just 128mb and it was ok
I added a 512mb just cause I could get it 4 $10 new at the time and I figured what the hell they are ddr of course

a pissin fourtune, but it is one hell of a pc that runs literally any game flawlessly! Even games like UT2004, Halo and Far Cry!

i wonder though, its gonna be hard to find ram for $20....i mean your allowance and what not

Yeah. Newegg is selling a 512MB stick of PC3200 for $39, but that's DDR. PC133 costs almost double as much now (which is why I am buying a new motherboard for my media PC, because the board + 512MB is about the same as PC133 512MB by itself, and it's faster this way...)
