Rom editing

Post by Squidlekins »

So last time I was perusing the internet I came across some pictures and youtube videos of OOT HD. Which stands for Ocarina of Time High Definition.
Naturally being quite fond of Zelda this sent me into a fit of excitement and glee as I googled for more information. However I only came across a few sites with some incomplete tutorials and or broken links. So I ask: does anyone know how to do this? Can that person give me some links so I can try my hand at it?
I would really love to attempt re-texturing some of my old favorites. OOT of course, and maybe make Perfect dark a little darker...

I don't know anything about rom editing but it might be worth starting somewhere easier, like with nes roms and such, and work your way up to N64.

I thought it stood for ketchup and potatoes.

Also, "rom editing" is referred to as "ROM Hacking".

Is this what you meant?

I'm pretty sure that's a bunch of custom textures loaded in the emulator, and not an edit of the ROM itself.

There's some information on it here:
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/nintendo ... packs.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or just punch "project 64 custom textures" or "project 64 texture pack" into Google and see what comes up.

yes that's what I was talking about.
I had already done some more research on my own and I did everything according to what multiple internet sites said. You're supposed to download 'Rice's video plugin' and put it in your plugins folder on PJ64 and then just select it in the settings menu of PJ64. but as soon as I press settings I kept getting a missing .dll error message. It says: The program can't start because MSVCP71.dll is missing from your computer.
It's only advice is to reinstall the program, which proved to be, big surprise, useless.
I can't figure out what the problem is and a search for MSVCP71 only sent me to sites trying to get me to download viruses or buy crap.
Now another thing is would it be possible to edit the ROM itself? make an entirely different version of a game instead of just using a plugin to change the textures?

It's possible.

But N64 coding is so difficult it's not even worth trying.

A texture injector would be most awesome, IF the n64 could handle hi-res textures for games. Not sure if it could. I don't think it can since it wouldn't make sense for the game designers to be so lazy to just make crappy, blurry tiled textures for EVERY game for the n64.

Also, if you're having problems with .dll files that can't be found, keep the error dialog box open when it comes up, open up google, and type in the name of the .dll (example: MSVCP71.dll) that windows is calling missing. dll-files.com (I believe it's called that) will most likely have your fix.

Wikipedia wrote:The Nintendo 64 had weaknesses that were caused by a combination of oversight on the part of the hardware designers, limitations on 3D technology of the time, and manufacturing capabilities. One major flaw was the limited texture cache of 4 KB. This made it difficult to load anything but small, low color depth textures into the rendering engine. This small texture limitation caused blurring due to developers stretching small textures to cover a surface, and then the console's bilinear filtering would blur them further. To make matters worse, due to the design of the renderer, if mipmapping was used, the texture cache was effectively halved to 2 KB. Towards the end of Nintendo 64's lifetime, creative developers managed to use tricks, such as multi-layered texturing and heavily-clamped, small texture pieces, to simulate larger textures. Conker's Bad Fur Day is possibly the best example of this ingenuity. Games often also used plain colored Gouraud shading instead of texturing on certain surfaces, especially in games with themes not targeting realism (e.g., Super Mario 64).

Good info to know, eagle, thanks!

It would be extra nice to have someone inject the textures into the ROM, since every time you save or load state, those new textures have to be loaded over. I can only imagine how large it would make the ROM, though.

Now that I think of it, the game looks nicer, but it's not worth all of the time you spend finding a working version of the plugin, finding the texture packs, unRARing them, moving them where they need to be (which takes a long time, it's like a million different .png files), changing the settings of the emu, starting the game, waiting for it to load all of the textures, and then debugging any problems along the way. Most of that you only have to do once, except for loading all of the textures. Personally I get bored of games after only so long, no matter how refreshed everything may look.

Well I've done every step the internet has told me to do. I even found my missing .dll on the exact site you mentioned Biased. I put it in windows/system32 which is where I was told it goes after some searching but when I tried to register it with the command 'regsvr' or something along those lines. It did nothing for me. So this is my new roadblock.
Also, I don't care how much work or time this takes. I want to play Zelda the way it was meant to be played, and maybe even try to contribute to the retexturing project. Who can honestly say that this doesn't look awesome?

Majora's Mask with TP Textures

Needs a bit of work but I think that Majora's Boss area looks pretty sexy with them there new textures.
