To settle the whole "spelling&grammer" issue

kidding. I am of the opinion that if somebody can type with at least understandable English and basic punctuation it is usually good enough. There really isnt any excuse for some of the godawful spelling and grammar I have seen on the internet. If I see blatant and obvious errors I am going to call that person on them or point them out, if they got their point across without sounding like a retard then I have no problems with being somewhat lax on the spelling and grammar rules, I know I'm not perfect myself. The key is to be able to clearly convey messages and information

also, firefox has built in spellcheck, on a forum there is NO EXCUSE for really jacked up spelling. how hard is it to right click a word?

Think about this: BenHeck forums are an ENGLISH forum. However, we get a lot of visitors from countries like France, Japan, Germany, etc. Not only does bad grammar make you look unintelligent and to consider your posts to be worth so little that you cannot spend a second fixing them, but people from these other countries, either using auto translators, or struggling to understand the English themselves, are going to be completely stymied when it comes to your posts. This may not matter on personal things, or on "fun" forums, like general purpose gaming forums. But these forums are dominiantly an informational source, and you should treat it as such.

With the serious stuff other have not covered, two cheap shots:

1. LOL, TIC FOR TAC. This is why people need to LITERATURE MOAR.

2. "Come on guys. We are hacking modders" Reminds me of times on this and other forums when people post things along the lines of "I R TEWH 1337 HAXXMODZR, SO DONT B HATGIN EANGLHS IS 4 TH NOOBZ DUN DUSREPCT". It does not matter WHAT we are, here or otherwise. Take that extra second to think about your post, and make sure it lacks easy to correct mistakes. For it not for my propensity to have well worded, quasi-logical posts, I would have been perma-ban'd a long, long time ago.

I don't mind minor grammatical or spelling mistakes so much as texting shorthand, especially when it isn't substantially shorter (such as "neone" instead of "anyone").

This actually is the worst of all though:
people that run on and on with naught a form of punctuation in sight and we're supposed to decipher where one thought ends and another begins despite no indication where than might be which simply discourages anyone from reading whatever thread of consciousness that streamed from the keyboard to the screen and I absolutely hate this and it is actually quite a struggle to do even intentionally so I have a hard time understanding why this is ever done because it is not at all conducive to reading at all

When we read words, our brain groups the word together and reads it as a whole. Thus you can scramble all the letters of a word as long as the 1st and last letters remain the same. Try it! It's fascinating; SO DON'T BE HATIN'!!!

Very valid opinions guys; however, I do think it would be ridiculous to expect every user to check their post via Firefox or Microsoft word.

Just use Firefox and you have the spellchecker right there. I hope you don't think he meant that you should use IE and then copy-paste the post in to Firefox just to spellcheck it...

I, however, am speaking for the silent portion of this site. I have seen plenty of good spellers that post BS. Just like the post count, I have learned, spelling is not a judge of intelligence. Spelling: use it, don't worship it.

Spelling is just one criterion for looking intelligent. The problem with bad spelling and grammar is that it makes it so easy for people ti dismiss your posts. Nevermind what I think, it's in your own best interests to get it somewhat right if you are asking a serious question and want answers.

And I realize that part of reason you're creating this thread in the first place is my comment in the flower thread, so I can explain what happened. Although I'm not a native English speaker, I think I'm decent enough. (Add to that a certain degree of OCD. I even start chat messages with a capital letterand go all AAAAHHHH when I misspell words.) But sometimes I don't understand words. Like when you said "Dandy lion". The reason I didn't get it was because I had never said or heard that word, only seen it in writing. And until then I thought it was pronounced "Dan-dee-lee-on", so I didn't detect the homophone. So I googled "dandy lion", and while I did that I started thinking "Could he mean...". But at that point I had already seen that picture, and I thought it was so awesome I had to post it. (Also notice the dandelion in its hat.)

I know you are putting a huge emphasis on how scrambling the middle letters of the word can still be perceived by our brains. But there is a big difference between

"the kwik brawown fox jimps ovah tez layze dog"

and

"The qicuk borwn fox jmups oevr the lzay dog."

The only reason our brain can perceive the second sentence is because all of the original letters are still in the word. The first sentence, however, the letters are not mixed correctly, has letters replacing others, has too many letters, or are missing them altogether.

I also love how people try to explain to you their point of view, but you act like a ignorant brick wall. Even walls can spell.

Here's my theory about why we seem to be a little touchy on the subject on this board:

More than 9 times out of 10, people who have the kind of spelling or what have you that everyone else despises, they're asking for help. But, at the same time, they're showing that they don't really care about how they present themselves or how they come across to the people that do care about grammar. Usually, the people that care about that are the people that are trying to help. It's like going to an interview for a very professional job wearing flip flops, torn shorts, and a stained T-shirt.

Yes, some people don't have English as their first language. If they try and maybe make a quick apology, it's understandable. But for everyone else, this is stuff learned in 4th grade (your/you're, their/there/they're) or stuff made up without any real advantage (neone, wut, ur). If you're that young that you haven't learned this yet, you're too young to be on the board.
