What exactly does a 7808 regulator do? I have one on my little intec screen and from my highly detailed analysis I have found it to get really REALLY hot, really really fast. Which should mean a bunch of electricity is going through it. but to what end? is it like some big, nasty, hot resistor? Can it be removed from my board if I'm using a batteries for it's power source? What is the difference between a 7808 and a 7805? (don't say 3...)

Lol, think nvm1534 had a brainfart, it regulates VOLTAGE down to 8v, and the excess is turned into heat.

A 7808 outputs 8v, a 7805 outputs 5v.
Check to see if the power line that goes into the 7808 is connected to anything else, if not, then you can remove the 7808 and input 8v into where its output was.

ha I actually didn't know the difference either. Glad someone had the balls to ask. I was hoping I would figure it out eventually....kinda like the difference between composite and RGB....Which I only recently figured out thx to a HELPFUL link on this forum.
