What are some MUST HAVE games for Sega Genesis?

Hey there! Haven't been on it quite some time. Anyways, I have decided that I am going to buy a Sega Genesis. Never had one before. I've heard WAAAAAY too many good things about it. How could I not buy it? And I know I could just get a free emulator, but I like the actual hardware. It gives me a sense of ownership. So what are the must have games for the system? Also, if you know any peripherals for it that you can suggest, I'd like that too. On a side note, I think I am going to buy the 1st generation one instead of the 2nd or 3rd. I like the look of it a lot more, and it has true stereo sound. Thanks for your help!

Gunstar Heroes is my absolute favorite Genesis game for some reason

If you feel like picking one up, i'd also suggest finding a SEGA CD as well...as games like Popful Mail, Sylpheed and the Lunars are just too awesome!

desert strike, jungle strike, urban strike - basically awesome top-down helicopter games.

Shining Force 1&2 - basically awesome turn based strategy/RPG games

Toejam & Earl 2: Panic on Funkotron
It shows off the Yamaha sound chip's funk capabilities very well.

Virtua Racing
It's a slideshow, yes, but it's 3D racing on a Genesis and it runs faster than Hard Drivin'.

Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles
Not getting these is like getting a SNES and not Super Mario World.

Battletech---this game was kicka$$ for a mech game in the day.

General Chaos---This was stupid fun,once all of us got the controls down it was one of the best multi-player games ever.

Herzog Zwei---This game was fun in 1 or 2 player mode....First RTS I actually liked.
