Playing AVI files off of a USB HDD on TV

I have a bunch of AVI's on my 250GB USB hard drive and I want to play them on a TV. I've already been able to do it with the PS3, but I'm looking for a way to do it without it. So I can say, take the drive to a friends house without bringing the PS3 to play it.

Suggestions?
