Where should a beginning hacker start?

I'm very interested in hacking, but I obviously need to get a bit of experience before I tackle something big like Ben does. What are some projects you think a beginning hacker could work on?

Changing LED's in a system is one thing many people recommend.
I would say, take a dead PCB and practice soldering on it.
Or if you have a little experience, you can start with a Noac portable.

agreed. even if it comes down to soldering bits of wires together. the more you do it the better you get. I find taking electronics apart and putting them back together also helps you learn how things are built.

Well, you shouldn't hack into Microsoft first, maybe start with a small local bank.

Just kidding. Start with simple mods. I recommend reading up on electronics and taking classes if possible as well.

I know.

In reality, I'm still trying to crack the password encryption on Windows 7. You'd be surprised how much different it is from earlier versions of Windows. Of course, I could never figure out Vista and Windows 7 is based off that kernel. (With a much more stripped down and friendly to your PC version.)
No, don't point me to other sites, I want to figure it out myself.

my first hack was a 'super hacker' that did the hacking for me that can create a password for every byte in the world in a nano second
