Here's a real challenge for you

Hi,

I recently acquired from a friend a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S503 laptop. Unfortunately, the previous owner has literally destroyed it out of anger. It has been stomped and torn apart. However, all the internal parts (DVD drive, floppy drive, PCMCIA slot, etc.) appear to be intact.

My plan of attack for resurrection is currently:

1. Acquire a switch and wire it to boot the computer
2. Acquire a power adapter and possibly battery for the computer
3. Boot and test
4. Install Linux

The only problem: I have no idea where on Earth the power on switch would be wired to. Also, there is a portion of the bottom of the case which has something visibly missing, but I cannot tell what. If anyone could tell me what is missing and where to wire the power-on switch, I would be incredibly grateful.

On any kind of modern laptop, the power switch is momentary, not on/off.

Also, I can't tell what's supposed to be missing on the bottom. Do you have a better camera?

On the first picture, I'm noticing that the heatsink is missing. Did you remove it? If your angry friend managed to remove the heatsink it's more than likely that the board and/or CPU has suffered microdamage from the stress. (Unless he removed it normally before he went bonkers.) At any rate, don't have the computer turned on for more than 5 seconds without a properly attached heatsink or the CPU might literally catch fire. (Worst case scenario, CPU start emiting smoke and flames and is destroyed, best case scenario, the CPU senses that it's overheated and either shuts itself down or enters an extreme throttle mode)
On the second picture, the mysterious empty space is a mini-PCI slot. Most likely there used to be a wireless card there, or less likely a modem or wired network card.
