i took apart one of my n64 3rd party controllers, and found that the mobo connected to the joystick with four wires, like so:
can anyone please shed some light on this?
im trying once again to get a psp analog stick to work on a n64 yet this joystick's connection doesn't seem very conventional

If you wanted to, you could just swap the red and green wire on the y-axis and it should be the same thing, resistance increases between the two in one direction and decreases the other. There's a pinout about a 1/4 way down the page. You'd have to connect X and Y to the blue and green respectively and the red to the V+ or Gnd, depending on what it goes to on your controllers' board. Ignore the unused connection and it *should* work ok. Haven't tested this myself so I can't say for certain.

They should be the same, the only difference is that the early ones had the pins on it and newer ones the don't. I would just give it a shot. Can't really fry anything unless you short something out really bad on the board.

thanks a heap for the help!
so I wired it up as so and now the analog stick is semi working except
left and right (x axis) are swapped around
"up" when held all the way is really slow and back is really fast
and with the left and right inverted right (left in the game) is fast and left (right in the game) is slow
also the stick drifts a bit but i did notice a difference in the resisttance of each pot when i tested and it does hold still in a certain spot.
care to be even more of my hero and help me with these last hurdles?

Would you be able to get a good pic of the controller's board and where each wire attaches to? It may help to get a better idea of what you're working with. Do you happen to know if the common wire to each pot goes to ground or 3.3v?

im having trouble taking a good pic and school keeps getting in the way of my working time,
update
i swapped the x and y lines and now when i rotate the stick 90 degrees it effectively means up is up, down is down, left is left, and right is right. but up and right is heaps slow compare to left and down.
any ideas on how to fix this, how the hell do i decrease resistance on right and increase the resistance on left (same for up/down)???

The value of the original pot was something different than what you have now. The ones I've seen tend to be like 10K and the PSP stick is most likely something else. My guess is that it has something to do with there being a pull up or down resistor on the board connected to one of the pins that goes to the pot, the one that changes value when you move the stick up/down or left/right. It would be a matter of figuring out where that resistor is and changing it out, that's my guess but, I don't have any third party controllers that I can open up and take a look at. If that resistor does indeed exist, it will probably be a 5K resistor, half of the total on the pot. You kinda see where I'm going with this?
You'd have to measure the resistance of the PSP stick from either + or gnd to X or Y with the stick centered and replace the on board resistor with something of the value you measured. Another option might be eliminating that resistor all together (if it's actually there) and just connecting both + and gnd connections on the psp control stick to +3.3v and gnd and just keep outputs of X and Y axis directly to the input pin on the controller chip. Here's some pics I drew up using my 1337 paint skilz to maybe help you get an idea of what to look for:

would it be too hard to wire the original analog stick back up and measure the values with that on? that would give you a good starting point of what the values need to be.
Also, what brand is that controller?

i tested the resistance with the original joystick off the board, how would it change when it is connected?

well this is becoming more frustrating than i imagined, the resistance of the PSP stick matches up with the original joystick somewhat, yet somehow i have to configure the psp joystick to only use three wires, or alternatively hook it up with vcc (plus 3 v) and ground, yet that doesnt work either.
guess ill just have to wait for kibble to get it working...siiigh

I believe you should only need three wires for the PSP stick, how many are you using? Unfortunately I don't have a psp stick or a 3rd party controller so my help here is limited. Still, some pics would help if you could get them when you have a chance.
