Hold your horses!

I can tell you with all honesty, Weller soldering irons are the best soldering irons out there, and the cheapest, too.

For at least a year or two, I was buying radio shack irons. They're only ten bucks, right? Well, they break every month or two and you're back at square one, so you figure "well, it's just another ten bucks...".

Then I decided to treat myself to something fancy. I bought a $25 Weller (25 or 35 watt I think), and it's still kicking, years later.

The one problem is that Weller soldering irons use a threaded tip, which makes finding replacement tips a little tricky. But at least it will last long enough that you need to look for some (Hint: eBay is full of them). You will love that iron for all eternity. Combine it with a ~$5 dimmer and ~$5 power outlet from Home Depot or the equivalent hardware store near you, throw it in a box, and you have yourself a dependable soldering station that will last you a very long time for under $50.

The one I got:

http://cgi.ebay.com/WELLER-SP23LK-SOLDE ... 286.c0.m14" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The one I recommend using with a dimmer:
PM'ed

Or if you're serious about soldering:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Weller-WP35-Wel ... 286.c0.m14" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(the tips for which can be bought for $3 each)

I'm sending you a PM because this one auction is crazy good.
Hey, sup?

Interestingly, Radio Shak carries the threaded replacement tips to fit a Weller 25W. Ace and True Value, and most other hardware stores also carry them.

My fixed weller uses a normal tip, not threaded.

Also, why get a WP35 when you could get a WES51 for the same price?

Aright new question: Do I solder wires straight to the pins or do I desolder the attatchment and just run wires from the board? thanks
Or Just to the solder points on the back......now thanks

What specifically are you talking about relocating? The cart slot?

Well I think I already know how to do that. I'm just talking about the wires that go to the screen and the board and that....

Oh. Well, on the psone screen if you're using that, the connectors on the bottom can be removed, or you can solder straight to them, or you can solder to the contacts on the back side, or you can cut the wires from the plug and solder there.

On the n64 for power and AV you can solder to the pins, or you can desolder the pins and solder straight to the board. Whatever works.

Alright we finally got our internet back and I want to start on this portable again now....still have question though:

I'm going to do the antiglare mod and I took off the ps1 screen case. Now I have to unplug the screen from the curcuit board and i already have the top white plug unplugged but there's this I guess some kind of really thin ribbon cable thats still holding it connected. How do I get this off? I cant seem to find out how to unplug it and I dont want to break it. Thanks.

On the back side of the psone screen motherboard is a FFC connector, there's a little brown tab on it at the plug end. Just lift up on this brown tab with a screwdriver or your fingernail and you will hear it pop up, then the ribbon will slide out easily.
