Toys 'R' Us Going Into the Used Games Business

Post by Black Six »

From here:
Toys R Us is rolling out its video game trade-in program nationwide today, allowing customers to sell games from as far back as the (OMG!) Intellivision. Those who use the program will receive gift cards for the value of their trade-in, which can be used for any product at Toys R Us, Babies R Us or online at Toysrus.com.

Exchanging games works by going to the "guest services desk" with the merchandise, it'll be scanned and, if the value is acceptable, the customer will receive a gift card. We're honestly shocked at Toys R Us accepting trade-ins that go all the way back to systems like the Atari 2600. We're following up for some more details and will update as soon as we hear back.
I'm wondering just how much they'll give you for an Atari 2600 cartridge, lol.

The question is, will they sell any of the games older than PS2? (I know even GameStop pretty much phased everything older than last-gen out. :()

Or will this become the video game equivelant of "Cash for Clunkers", where perfectly good merchandise gets destroyed in a PR move?

I just hope they sell the old games at a reasonable price. Not the gamestop "Pokemon Gold for $30" BS.

They used to do the same thing years ago. I remember scouring Funcoland for cheap games to trade in to get my Saturn and PSX. They don't resell them. If they ended up reselling them, Gamestop will simply buy them out.

Now that I moved into this small town, there are no vidya game stores...I plan to open up a small shop where I will deal with every kind of system...

Children younger than you, and their parents. And by extension, parents of older children.

Don't forget grandparents looking for the "po-kay-men" action figures.

I think the last time I bought anything from Toys R Us was back in 2004 or 2005. They had Intec screenpads for PS2/PSone for $20. Maybe we bought a board game or two there since, but that's about it. They used to be awesome back when they had that "warehouse" layout with tall racks and the video game ticket system, but the "R Zone" layout and the complete overhaul they did (where they spread their meager merchandise out to look like they had more) were no good. :|

To work in that room where you exchanged your ticket for the game would be the best job in the entire solar system.

Wow, isn't it great how we wont be able to buy these CIb games? because they are shipping them to a 3rd part source! Also, i hate how they have to be CIb...

We should have a party where we all meet up and sit in front of the booth while waiting for people to walk in with CIB Chrono Triggers and Earthbound. :P
