Official SNES Controller?

Ok, everyone knows that Ben's book had mentioned use of the original SNES controllers, and how they had 2 chips in them that you could desolder and rewire to create your own SNESp controls.

I had purchased a Mini SNES off ebay with 2 games and a controller, but it was a 3rd party controller that did not have any chips, just that black plastic mound on the PC board. Sorry life of me I do not know the name of those yet, but i know they work like the chips or micro controllers.

So I waited considering my project is on hault. I later find a store with some originally boxed SNES controllers *new*, I mean it had Nintendo's stamp on it and it looked as though it was from the 90s. So a perfect controller to tinker and make a SNESp with, but upon opening it just recently I discovered it had no chips as well, just the black plastic mound. The question I have is that did Nintendo, so farther down the line of the release of the SNES decide to make cheaper controllers, or was the boxed versions different than the ones that originally came with the console?

The box said 1997
The controller said "Rd. 1991 Nintendo"
The controller did have a model # on it SNS 005
Although the box said it was model # SNS 102


I'll post pics i took of the box and controller later, as photobucket was down for maintenance at the time i tried to post this.

Not answering your question, but you can just solder your new controls directly to the button pads...

As I know you said, that your not answering my question, I am still curious as to why the controller is like that.

Plus from the get go, i wanted controls that had that softer touch to them, and not the clicking of tact switches.
So my plan is to cut up the controller and re-wire accordingly while still using the original PCB and buttons.

Either nwill work the bolhe have the same chips 2-nes controllers=1-snes controller.
And just becuse it it a glop top chip dosent mea you cant hac it. If anything its better becuse its smaller an flatter.Just cut the bouat and extend it with wires.

I know just the controllers you speak of. Those are not official controllers. They are pirate crap controllers. If you hold one next to an officail one, you will notice the differences. For one, the pirate controllers have pale buttons. Then, there is the plastic quality. The pirate ones feel very cheap as opposed to sturdy 1st part ones. Last and most obviously, the nintendo logo. The pirate ones have the nintendo logo on the front of the controller. the officail ones have a grey decal that says "super nintendo entertainment system".

You need the shift registers from 2 NES controllers. An easier route is to buy the shift registers from Digi-Key. The part no. is 296-2040-5-ND.

Since you want to have the classic feel, just use mushy tacts.

I finally got those pics, just to verify if anyone cares, doesn't matter to me, i'll just have to work around the drop top chip....

yeah thats not an official controler. there are many differences you can tell just from looking at the front.

nintendo licensed a 3rd party to make controllers for them near the end of its life span. So for all of you yes these are official licensed super nintendo controllers built by a 3rd party. They really are not bad controllers.

Interesting, anyway i think it was a steal considering. Not used and they work well despite being 3rd party.

That's a Yobo pirated Super NES controller. They used that exact same controller with added rapid-fire circuitry for the FC Twin.

Not true. Nintendo released a hard-to-find variant of the Super NES controller with the Nintendo logo molded into the top half of the controller shell with model number SNS-102, which was packed-in with the Super NES Mini.
