which screen? noob needs help

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

which screen? noob needs help

Post by muhalucha »

Hi, I am attempting a somewhat crazy project, its not a portobalization of a games console but the process is the same. I have read the stickies and have used the search, i am looking for a screen between 5" and 9" diagonal. I have been looking at:

ps one screen
ps2 screen 5"
ps2 screen 9"
xbox screen 5"
portable dvd player with

and im looking to spend under 60 wonga.

This would be great, only problem is my "device" only outputs DVI , HDMI and s-video. I know the ps one screen can handle s video, but to be honest i want something bigger. Over all the 9" ps2 screen looks perfect, so my queston is, is it suitable as a hacking screen and will it accept s-video (with or without mods).

Other thing, no one on this forum seems to be too keen on the 9"ps2 screen and there must be a reason, so what si it :P.

I may be wrong here, but the 9" PS2 screens are intec. Intec has very bad picture quality. This might only go for RGB and composite, I don't know about S-video.

well, in theory, the reason picture quality on intec screens suck, is because the lcd's themselves suck. so different input wouldnt change it.

@muhalacha:
i seriously doubt that this will work(in your budget, that is). it would help if you gave us more info. are you looking for hd? or is size more important than quality?

there are some screens on dx that might fit the bill, but i suggest you look at aeicomp. their screens are expensive, and lack audio amps, but they are very high quality, low power screens. plus they come "pre-disassembled"

Hi, i am building a portable UMPC tablet pctype thing. im not looking for HD, but it needs to be fairly good quality to read the writing(whats the quality like on the psone screen. The ps one screen would be ok and would make the overall device very small but im a bit worried on such a small screen i wont be able to read text, if its at all possible hd would be lovely though, but i doubt it is.

those creens you reecomended are just tooo exepnsive , and im based in the uk. As the mother board is only 3 by 3 inches i would like about a 5" screen (despite what i said earlier :wtf: ) and quality is definiteloy more important than size. this thing should be like a slightly bigger ds that runs linux and is fully capable of internet browsing , media play back and streaming.

I found this screen:

The resolution is great at a reasonable price, and it can accept VGA! Hooray!

are you using an omap 3 beagle board?

as for psone screens, text ingame is readable ish, but if you were looking at a web page or something, theres no way you could read it. go for at least 800x600 for resolution. you could get away with less, if you make it browse mobile webpages. (which are crap)

why are you building something like this? it would be much cheaper to buy one of the many devices with wifi, and customized interfaces and omap 1, 2, or 3 boards. i understand the allure of building it yourself, but it wont be nearly as affordable or usable as a premade one.

Trust me , ive researched the hell outa this , i know exactly to the penny how much it will cost and it is slightly cheaper than the smartQ 5 a similar ARM omapp 3 device. As for the moto , if you can buy it or build it , buy it . Well thast just no fun, many a thing i could have bought for less but i choose to make it because i can choose exactly what features i have and its an ongoing project and something to keep me busy, plus i love making stuff, this isnt the first portable media device i have made btw.

It's slightly cheaper if you don't break anything and have accounted for every little part you're going to have to buy unexpectedly.

Seeing as you don't know the difference between mA and mAh, that's questionable.

how do you want to control this? are you going to install a trackpoint and a mini keyboard? or are you going to make it touchscreen? also, how are you going to get this for less than a smartQ 5? the sQ5 costs like 200. a beale board costs 140, add a decent screen (about 70$), and some good lipos (50$), and you are above cost already. :o

first of all ma is milliamps , and maH is milliamp hours. so shut up .

i already have li-on batteries , chargers , assorted electronics bits , case material and everyhting , it will have a touchscreen of a palm Z21 , , which i already have working over usb , and drivers are available for arm linux , i am going to run ubuntu ARM (im just nicking it off the smart q 5 website). You guys arent the first people to tell me it wont work , and it will be cheaper , and i just love building stuff , even if it was more expensive i would still build it in preferance to buying it , there.

EDIT: as for the keyboard , i was given a dead psion revo , it has a nice keyobard over aly of a similar size , i am going to glue lots of micro switches on the bootom , and remap a full size desktop pc , impossible i hear you say ? , im willing to prove you wrong.

could somebody confirm any difference in picture quality on the ps1 screen with and without the s-video mod , as i have found out a simple convertor will allow me to get composite out of the beagle board.
