Portable N64 Help? (1st portable)

Post by Billy »

Well I am currently making my first portable system and it is an N64. But I am a noob to this so I need some help. If somebody could answer my questions I would be really grateful. :)

There are a few things that I just don't know much about. The main one being heat sinks. So, I know what they do but I need to know
- Where to get them
- What kinds to get
- Where to mount them on the N64 mobo

Also, would hot glue work for mounting or would that wear off from the heat of the N64?

That's my main concern right now so if somebody would be willing to help me out that would be awesome. I will post other questions/concerns as I progress.

Mount em to the big black chips on the 64 motherboard.

I`m also happy to answer other questions :D

Thanks Nintendott!
Ok, so...the case...
I was thinking of just using a premade case from polycase.com. I am going to get one of the ZN series.
http://www.polycase.com/category/zn-series.html

I wanted to get the ZN-40 because it is smaller but it only has an inside depth of 1.195 inches
The ZN-40 has an inside depth of 1.883 inches. Would the PSone LCD and N64 mobo fit inside the ZN-40??

I would recommend the ZN-45 if this is your first portable.

Well, the I'm going to go out on a tangent here and say both yes and no. The ZN-40 is plenty workable and has been done before.
However, the ZN-45 will give you more room for your errors, such as too long of wires or not relocating the expansion pack/not cutting down the jumper pack.

So yes, I do agree with argelfraster. Get a ZN-45

Thanks for all the help! :D Now I just need to get the right battery...I hear that most people recommend at least a 4000 mAh.

From what I gathered, li-ion's are safer than LiPo's but bulkier. Since I am completely new to this I think it's best to go with the li-ion's. So could somebody please recommend a (safe) battery for me to use.
And if 4000 mAh is not a good battery to use, let me know.

EDIT: I am using an un-modded PSone LCD screen. Just so you know.

li-poly arnt too dangerours and i dont think there is any difference in size, basically if you rupture either type of cell your screwed and if you dangerously charge either your also screwed, except with li-poly's you could be screwed more :D

 why.
And these are good batteries: http://www.all-battery.com/polymerli-io ... 50140.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I use these for my n64p and they are great, and cheap.

By the way about the heatsinks, you also need a thermal conductor like thermal paste or something like that. The original thermal pads are terrible, and get new heatsinks, original n64 heatsinks suck.

Agreed.
Oh, and @ Nintendott:
Not even SS could fit the whole unit in the ZN 45. And no offense, but he is a much better modder than you are.

Thanks so much for the help everybody. Really appreciate it! :)

But I ran into a problem. I think. :?
When I was taking off the the N64's heat sinks one of them pulled on the chip underneath and broke the sides loose.
Image
I've circled what came loose. Those two prongs on each side just came off when I pulled off the heat sink. So I gotta know...am I screwed? Do I need those to be connected for the N64 to work properly and if I do, how can I fix those. They are sooo tiny.
I played the N64 after that to see if I noticed anything different but it seemed completely normal.

should be fine, nothings broken as such, if anything you might want to "resolder" the connections just by holding your iron over the pins for a few seconds
