Opinions about onlive?

Post by MountainMotor »

I've been kind of watching the progress of onlive and wondered what everyone's thought's were on it. I think it has potential but it's going to take a lot to pull off what they're trying to do.

Wheee, live video compression artifacts in games! 100+ ms latency in everything!

They might be able to pull it off because who's going to tell the difference between Medium and Enthusiast in Crysis when the streaming video is compressed anyway? It's going to be like Blu-Ray vs compressed OTA HDTV, only blurrier and more pixelated.

But seriously, what about people who DON'T have 5+ MB cable modem connections? What about satellite internet? What about internet connections with monthly bandwidth caps? Will they compress the stream more for that? What will the monthly service charge be? Will they also charge per game? If you already own a title, can you play it through that for free or will you have to purchase it again? They have so many unanswered questions.

Hopefully they'll have a PC client so you can play on things like netbooks. (I wonder if there's any freeware you can simulate this on at home using a host PC and a client PC.)

It will be big when and if it comes out, however I don't think it's a major threat to consoles and PC gaming as we know it.
