Stargazing

I want to go stargazing soon. I want to bring my typical 1980's home telescope and see some awesome things like nebulae and other close-up neat sky things.

To do this I need an idea of what to look for in my hemisphere during this season.

Any ideas where to start? I'm pretty much clueless.

There's a meteor shower tonight that's supposed to be visible over most of North America. I read in a local newspaper that prime viewing times are midnight to 5.00 a.m. EST.

yup, wiring a remote shutter control for my camera at the moment... looking forward to some nice bulb shots (exposure is being taken as long as you tell the camera to) with that Glad the skies are clear around here!

ah, yes... they weren't quite what I was hoping (no meteors in the area I was shooting as I was taking a photo) but still pretty cool to look at.

Shorter exposure, but decent light

Longer exposure; the earth's rotation is fairly obvious

I saw a few, but it was still kind of disappointing.

Here in my area the lights of the city go up to the sky and light it up in a tint of orange.

I know how you feel, kind of. While where I live isn't that bad, I can see Hamilton/Toronto in the distance sometimes, depending on where I am. Also, I was watching the meteor shower right below some streetlights.
