Phoenix molds successful, albiet with a "free" tex

Post by benheck »

Once I paint them I'll post the pics to the Blog, but the important thing is the silicon molds/resin casting procedure works.

I plan to immediately make ANOTHER proto-case (probably Monday) to resolves some issues I've discovered:

The front/rear walls are way thicker (1/8") than they need to be. It takes so long for the resin to fill those parts that by time the side walls start filling up the resin is gelling (hence the mess seen on the photo).

Initially I made them thick to ensure 1) strength and 2) easy filling but considering how the resin is able to seep into thin areas and is fairly strong I think 1/16" thick front and back walls (my usual standard) will be fine.

Also the resin cases weigh about 5 ounces each - about 3 times what the original piece did! So yeah, it needs to loose some weight.

I blithely didn't include air escape holes in the mold but that wasn't a problem. There were air pockets visible in some areas (about the middle of each cast piece) so this is where I'll drill an air hole for future pieces. (The air pocket isn't visible from the outside of the case)

More info coming this afternoon!

I don't know about most people but I would prefer the Paddle Knob to be on the Right side of the system instead of the Left side.(I wonder what Poll voters would say)

Very nice work none the less.

/|\= Do people just use these because either it shows what you want to say about somebody else posts (hint: quote button) or it looks like Atari's Logo?

Anyway good luck, and I can't buy one!
