Looking for ideas for a PSP "home console"

Post by gumbyx84 »

Hey all. I have an odd request (as usual) for you guys. A friend of mine has recently put back together his broken PSP (which became broken after having a high-speed collision with a wall) and we found that the system wasn't in the best of shape. The analog stick doesn't work anymore and most of the face buttons are busted. The screen sorta works, but there is visible damage to it. Also the UMD drive is probably shot. He was going to get another PSP but didn't really want to because it was still usable. I mentioned hacking it and showed him this article from HackADay http://hackaday.com/2008/10/27/making-t ... -portable/. He is now interested in trying to take his semi-busted PSP and console-izing it. Basically, he wants to make a custom case to house the PSP mothboard and screen. He would then wire the controls to an external controller (not directly, through a port of some kind). the PSP's native video output to output component video and use the Fuse plugin can be used output the PSP display to a TV and force it to output in 16:9. This is just an idea though. He seems to like an idea I came up with to use the plugin RemoteJoyLite to output the PSP's display and audio to the PC. This will only work for the main XMB and games (not firmware updates) however.

We were also thinking of wiring in a hard disk or flash card raid to use instead of the standard Memory Stick Pro Duo for storage. He could load ISOs of his games directly to it. Using RemoteJoyLite, he would be able to re-route the PSP's display to his computer screen and have access to most of the face controls (volume for example).

He can do the work (he's an electrical engineer), but I know he doesn't have time to fully design it by himself. He's helped me out a lot at our job and with my own random modding project attempts, so I'm trying to return the favor by helping him with the design of this custom case and ideas of how to wire everything up. Basically, I'm looking for ideas of how this can be easily done. We both have a basic idea of what it should look like, but not really sure how to go about it. I'm upload a basic (VERY basic sketch I threw together in OpenOffice to help illustrate what we are thinking of doing.

Interesting. Sounds like a potentially fun project.

I don't know very much about the PSP at all, so I can't give much advise in that respect, but I do have a few thoughts. Regarding the controller port, an old serial PC controller would give you a cord (9, 15, 25 pins/wires) and you could remove the port from an old PC or those are still available at "The Shak", or other suppliers on-line. I've used this method myself for similar applications. It's easy to find, cheap, professional looking, and has held up very well over time.

I'd also recommend taking a look over at dealextreme.com to just see what repair parts are available. Perhaps he could still repair/replace and incorporate the UMD drive if he so wishes? To me, it's just one more easily adapted feature the finished console could have.

Don't mean to double post, but this is a BUMP and question in one.

For those of you that buy pre-made cases for your mods, can you recommend anything that might be of use for this project? Looking for something similar in width of the PSP (1000 or 2000), but deep enough to house the system motherboards, UMD drive, flash media/hard drive (probably 2.5), PSP power supply, screen, and any other necessary parts/equipment.

Thanks for the heads up on Polycase.com. Looks like they have just what I was talking about,

Paperclip is because the image I have in my first post is an attachment.

This is where I get my project boxes.

They give free samples of their new products. You need to make an account using real info. Make up a company name and make it sound legitimate, then you're good to go.

Pactec's boxes are too old fashioned and squary I think. At polycase things are new looking and are very high quality.

Currently, I'm just looking for ideas. My friend is the one that makes the final decisions. I do thank you guys for the links though. I had no ideas that they sold stuff like that to the normal consumer.

Anyway, I'm going to show him my ideas when I get into the office today (He was out last Friday). I'll post an update then.
