Why do you bother? Those things cost $.27 at the store and die in three days. It doesn't, it'll die some retarded way. I had one when I was a kid, and it lodged itself in one of those castle decorations in the tank and died. I used to buy them for my daughter and they kept getting tank rot/eaten until I was all "@#$ it. (flush) Not buying you another one, princess."

I have to disagree weaponepsilon, it all depends on how you take care of them. About 8 or 10 years ago, my family built a pond in our backyard, and not wanting to invest a lot of money in the fauna got some 10 for $1 feeder goldfish. Two died within the first month and another within a year. A few years later though and they were about 6 inches long. Then another got eaten by a heron. Those other six are still alive though, and have been supplemented with some Comets. They've even reproduced, though very few of the babies tend to survive, they've still increased in numbers.

So yeah, give them a big space, feed them regularly and circulate the water and they can be fine!

You must be lucky. Everyone that I knew has had at least 2 dozen before saying, "Hmm, no wonder that they are only meant feeders." Its like when you find a baby rabbit. The things just want to die.

I had a feeder I named "John". That sucker outlived every damn fancy goldfish my mom bought. He ate a few alive, too. He was six or seven when some fungus got him.
