battery alternative!

no more must you pay exorbant fees for rechargable AA and AAA batteries! the oxyride battery from panasonic is here! with nearly the battery life of an 1800mAh NiMh AA in an affordabe, disposable package and it lasts more than 2x the useage of a good quality standard alkaline! for appx. one dollar apeice (4$ for 4) these could be a temporary replacement for batteries in your portables (preferably small draw ones lol)

On a more serious note...

Those are the same AAs that came with my tape player, cd player, and GBC. They're mainly used for pack-in batteries, so people who can't afford proper batteries can at least play their Game Boy for, oh... 10 minutes?

sorry, your wrong bico. these batteries are brand spankin new. mebe you had similar lookin batteries by panasonic but they Arent oxyride batteries

Panasonic's batteries all look the same to me, and I threw mine out years ago. I just don't like the ones named "Heavy Duty" because they put out a lot of power for a short amount of time. Now that I've re-read the article, I WANT THOSE BATTERIES!

But it didn't say- do they make them in other sizes?

The oxyride batteries are batteries... I don't see how they're "battery alternatives." I mean, there are already like 4 or 5 different types of AAs and AAAs (manganese, alkaline, NiCd, NiMH, Li) so oxyride is just another one in the market. Toshiba supposedly just developed a new LiIon battery that recharges in 1 minute and is smaller than current ones though, so I'd look for that to be the real AA-killer in portabilization (especially on things like the N64 that need a lot of AAs to run)
Not trying to say that oxyride batteries aren't great, but seeing as you can get 10 Manganese AAs for the price of 1 Oxyride one, the only real benefit is to the environment (because 1 Oxyride sure doesn't last as long as 10 Manganese).

I think you are talking about the ones mentioned here. As some of us discussed, they charge fast, but they don't give the specs. I also don't think it's been released yet.

what i really meant is that they were a cheap alternative to rechargable batteries for a temporary setup, like if you cannot afford expensive rechargables (my NiMh are7$ for 4 w/o charger) you can get these pretty cheap and they are almost as good

It seems that for constant drain devices, they don't perform as well as top notch alkalines. However, for things which are used in spurts (like a digital camera), they are much better. A portable is more in the former category so I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

These aren't replacements for rechargeables though. They don't recharge. So that puts them in the same category as alkaline and manganese, which have great price advantages (alkaline batteries are even 4 for a buck, and since an oxyride battery is about 1.5x the lifespan, paying 4x doesn't make sense).

They do say that they retain 99% of the chargeability after something like 1000 charges, which is something NiMH cannot say. We'll have to wait and see how quickly they drain though.

from the magazine portable design(my dad gets it at work) I gotta find the link for you guys

I'd use them in my remotes. (That's where all my drained GBC and portable audio device batteries go.) Or put them in with gifts, so the reciever doesn't have to hunt down batteries. It's the thought that counts, after all.

I went to Building 19 (an overstock warehouse chain in New England) the other day and found 4 packs of AA batteries for a buck. Unfortunately, they're the cheap "Heavy Duty" batteries (the ones that weigh next to nothing).
