Simple Voltage Question

I got a free Intec PS2 stlyed LCD screen from my friend the other day (can you make a Jew any happier?) The downside is that he didn't have the original AC adapter

Since I fail at being an electrician, I need some advice. The back of the screen says DC IN 12V. Without checking anything I plugged in an AC adapter that says "INPUT:120VAC 60Hz 24W __ OUTPUT:12VAC 1.25A". I was holding the circuit board and kinda burned my thumb on a blue battery looking thing. It also smelled strange (not that I smell random things or anything ).

Did I break any components? Is the AC I have suited for the screen?

No NEVER USE AC ON DC DEVICES! I'm not sure if your screen has protection, is the blue thing you touched a diode (little thing with a lead on each side and a white stripe at one end)? When it says 'DC IN' you have to use a DC transformer. AC is constantly switching polarities, but DC always goes one way (Negative to positive- but conventional theory says positive to negative, and that's fine also, but it really goes negative to positive.)

Sorry, I'm no expert on what would happen if you did what you did, but if I was to guess I'd say you fried your screen.

the "blue thing" looks like a capacitor.. i don't know about your screen usually if there is a funny smell that is not a good sign...good luck

Thanks for the responses guys. I agree the screen is probably fried, but is there any way to fix it? Or am I better off getting a new screen?

Does the smell kinda like fish, or fish oil? Is the blue object, now bulging at the top? If so, you blew the capacitor.
