Broken garage sale xbox (now purchased and fixed)

Post by stuntpenguin007 »

I found an original xbox at a garagesale for $20 but the tray wont close all the way. Its not open far enough to tell what kind of drive it is, and the manufacture date sticker isn't there, but I can tell it has been unopened. Comes with no hookups or controller, but I have an extra set of hookups, and I think this could be an easy fix.

Worth it?

Yup. For $20, you could probably get it fixed by play n trade or something, then sell it, and still make a profit. (Even more if you can fix it yourself.. Probably just some dirty pulleys)

got me a plan. I'm going to ask the guy running it if he knows if there are any quarter sized holes in the disc tray. If there are I can assume its a samsung and buy it. If not... well I'm just not going to deal with disc read error.

I doubt he will know off the top of his head - when I first heard that you could tell what drive it was by the holes, I couldn't remember if it did or not. It's not something that you notice.

yeah I figured that too, so I just looked at the version guide, then his serial number and pretty much ruled a thompson drive out so I bought it. Turns out to be a phillips with a broken gear / cog thing, but I have an extra phillips drive with disc read error so I can just take it from that.

Also it came with a dvd remote reciever, but noit the remote. Now I have 2 and 1/2 xbox dvd remotes. I think I might need to do the start your xbox with a dvd remote mod.

meh, My 1.4 upgraded to samsung drive isn't bad. Its upgraded to a 500gb hdd and I dremeled (craftsmaned) out above the dvd drive and cleared the jewel so you can see through it.

Since I fixed this new xbox, the question is, What to do with it. I dont really want to put a bigger hard drive in it because I already have another xbox with a 500gb hdd. Maybe I should just softmod it... and leave it in a corner. It did come with a crap load of rap and country though and some rock. Now I can get my fix of Eminem every day.

I'm really mad at myself for trying to remove the ram from my two other xbox's that I thought were screwed over at the time but looking back now, one of them would have only taken about $3 and an hour of work to fix a bad tsop flash. Then I could have system linked them all and it would've been sweet.

Hack the Xbox, add a dashboard (like UnleashX), add more memory, and add emulators. I think have a tutorial in a PDF file on my computer, so I'll see if i can find it.
