A Controller-Specific Question (Noob)

Well, as much as I love the Nintendo 64, I can't say that I'm a fan of the N64 Joysticks. I am however a HUGE fan of the Gamecube's joystick (it feels so stable and accurate) and I was wondering if it's possible to somehow get the Gamecube's control stick to work for a Nintendo 64 Portable.

I plan on making an N64 Portable here in the future, and if it is possible to use the Gamecube's joystick, I'm going to go pick up another controller and use that one instead of the N64's.

There is a wide variety of 3rd party controllers that use pot sticks like the GameCube. The Hori controller for example, usez an actual GameCube analog.

Thanks for the reply! That looks like quite the silly controller (I mean that in the best way possible). I'll look around for one of those, however, I'd still like to know, is it possible to use the Gamecube one (wire it manually) to work with the N64? Or are the two completely different?

EDIT: So I started looking around, I don't see anything on EBay, and I'm not finding anyone State-side who's selling these suckers... I did however find the controller on the horistore.com site...

I just used that as an example. What I was getting at, is that they are different. The GC uses dual pots, while the N64 uses the same thing as the old analog computer mice. I have never tried using the dual pot sticks in place of an analog, but it would take some work to convert it.

So in theory, it may be possible, but in reality, it's going to take a lot more than soldering a wire to a board?

I'm just wondering how hard something like that is. I guess I'm confused at what I'm working with, since I haven't pried open any of the controllers yet, and I don't plan on prying open a GC controller unless I know it'll work...

I haven't tried this, but in theory, you may be able to connect the GC stick's lines to 2 other pots(pref. trim), then plug in your controller, and start a game of something, and keep adjusting the new pots untill the stick works. If I had an open controller and a couple of pots, I would give this a try, but ufortunatly I don't. In the next few weeks, if I get the supplies and time, I will try this (because now I'm currious), and post my results. If anybody has any ideas, or tries this themselves, post away.

Well, I have another question, unrelated to the topic's name, but still a question in regards to my future portable. I've been looking at a lot of the portables around here and on various sites, and I was wondering how people manage to get Gameboy screens to display other consoles (IE. Gamelvers N64p). I was wondering how the Gameboy monitors look and perform. Is the picture good quality? Is it tough to wire it, or however you manage to connect it?

I've actually never seen a GameBoy screen used. I've pretty much only heard of PS1, HipGear, and pocket TVs. Most screens are easy to wire.

Hey, go easy on Gamelver before he sees this thread. I think that was one of his early portables. He does awsome when he wants too (just look at his GCp).

That still looks better than anything I could ever do.

About using Gameboys as screens- could it be a software card hack which sends the n64 signals directly to the GBA processor?

(it made sense to me...)

It uses one of those AV-in things you get for the GBA, I think.

Probably, and in this case, you aren't using a GBA SP screen, you are using an adaptor.

And I didn't intend to be rude, I was just making mention of the noticable quality differences between his portable, and say somone like Ben's portables.

You can get em from ebay, but be warned. The resolution isnt the best thing in the world.
