POT values for PSX DTL-H 1202?? Insane spinning disc problem

Post by Ichisuke »

Hi there! I'm new here and I just subscribed to see if someone can help me, because I'm really desperate.
I have a brand "new" green PAL PSX debug unit, DTL-H 1202. The problem is that the console probably doesn't give the right volts to the lens. Sometimes in the beginning booting when the disc changes speed (from 1x to 2X?) it goes crazy and spin at an insane speed!! This is completely random. The games work just fine if the console can continue the booting correctly.
I've also noticed another thing: I have a game(actually FF9) that seems to have some "bad sectors". When I reach a specific point in the game(on the world map) the console have difficult to read the data from the disc and it won't load anything. But if I use the same laser unit on a PSone(the smaller one) the game load just fine!! Of course the game loads fine with the original PSone laser too.
BTW: if I made a scan of the disc in the pc it tells that the disc as bad sectors but not damaged, just to tell you that the disc is somehow screwed up.
Ok so after I understood that the green PSX has some weird problem reading the discs I've tried thid method:
http://www.mgboxall.force9.co.uk/focusbias.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; with no results except that I found out that the original V values were lower than what they should be(maybe?). With the original values sometimes the lens were having problem to "stay on track" even during playing session and I could hear the "pickup lens" thing going down and turning up, like when you turn on the console and it has to recognize the cd rom.
Then I also tried to follow this guide(there are no PAL ohm values): http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/916392/4696" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but again the problem is still there..... and notice that for the POT near the power connector I'm not ale to have a value higher than 20.
I've tried even changing all the laser unit with the original PSone and with the one from another dead PSone.... the spinning disc problem is always there.......
So buy a new laser seems futile, since I think that is a console problem, and that maybe it is related to the different values of the potentiometers.
Also why if I use the PSX laser in a PSone I can even have a game with bad sectors being read while in the old PSX not??
That's all if someone can tell me how to solve this "mistery" problem I would be really thankful.
P.S.: sorry for my english.

Is trying the disc drive assembly from a "regular" Playstation an option? (I don't know if drives are compatible between the big one and the smaller PSone, but the dev unit is probably 99% the same as a regular Playstation from the same era.)

The console now inside have a KSM 440 ACM, the original drive.
I've tried 2 PSone drives KSM 440 BAM with the same result.
I've also tried a KSM 440 AEM (from 7000-9000 model???) and it wasn't working at all, and anyway it doesn't fit inside the console,(the drive is "too high") and the ribbon cable is too long.

ps1 (not psx you had me confused for a while :P) debug units have poor laser quality and that is a trait shared with all the earlier (scph 100x) ps1 models, so the" bad sectors" in FF9 is most likely due to the laser. All ps1/psone lasers are compatible with each other, except the PSONE type have a smaller ribbon length. when checking the resistance of the POT's try checking when the unit is powered off and on. sometimes the resistance significantly changes when power runs through them. Also can you please make a video of what is going on with the disc spinning like crazy? If you did people would have a better idea of what is happening.
Last step would be to check what type of PSU your debug unit uses and swap it with a compatible one from an old (fat) ps1, its most likely to have 7 wires (if its the same as the earlier ps1's) and if so it should be compatible. their is a small chance your psu is damaged.
There is also rumors floating around that the debugger unit purposely throws errors into games, but that is uncomfirmed.
read these two links and at the wikipedia one read up more on the hardware revisions to see what "stuff" it uses, it apparently is a rev C board but it has parallel port and av direct out so its anyones guess as two what psu it uses.

Sorry but it's not that. As I've written before the same "old" ps1 laser read correctly the bad sector of the disc if I use the laser unit in the PSone(smaller white one etc)!!
So the old laser is still good!! but in the green debug it doens't work correctly, at least while booting the game.
Anyway the console is this one to make it clear once and for all.

And on wikipedia I don't know who wrote that the debug units cannot display a different region because it's false.
Time ago that write wasn't there since the debug PAL unit I have can display everything with no problem(infact I'm playing FF9 NTSC on the pal unit)
I'll try to post a video clip of the spinning disc and check out the PSU to understand what "revision" it is.

Hi there! Some time passed but I've finally upload a small video clip.
http://rapidshare.com/files/273084095/2 ... 8.mp4.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can see the insane speed disc problem.
If someone knows why the console do that....
I repeat that if I use the same laser unit in a recent PSOne the problem doesn't occur.
And it also able to read "bad sector" like my PSOne do with its original laser unit so I think thast is not a pot problem but that
the console itself is designed very poorly and that the laser doesn't receive the right amount of power.
I've also replaced the power board but nothing changed.
Thanks.

They are

Ben did it on his first PSoneP and I tried it a few days ago. Lovely long ribbon cable

thats a really cool playstation.
A truly wise man can entertain a thought without accepting it. A fool cannot withhold past judgments but instead closes his mine to new possibilities. Someone who wants to innovate simply needs to forget what everyone says isn't possible.
