After removing the battery cover, batteries, and game cartridge, remove these 6 screws. They are tri-wing, but if you have a small enough flat head screw driver you can get them off that way. That's how I got them off. If you don't have a tri-wing and intend to be opening and closing your MGB a lot, then you may wish to get two of these guys:
The screws holding together the NES RF switch box are just the right size and length to hold together your MGB, but they have regular heads so you won't need a special tool to remove them later. Plus it's a great way to reuse some parts of an otherwise worthless bit of garbage. OK, moving on, remove the next three Phillips head screws holding the motherboard on:
Next you need to release the ribbon cable. Pull up gently on the two white tabs, highlighted in this next image. Then gently pull out the ribbon cable. If you have released the two white tabs this should come out very easily and with no damage.
After you've removed that ribbon cable you can lift the whole motherboard off. Put it in a safe place, like an ESD protective bag. To remove the screen, you should begin in the corner marked in this next image:
Using a screwdriver, very carefully lift the corner of the screen. You will notice that the screen consists of two layers of glass. Lift from underneath the lower layer to avoid splitting them apart. The screen is held on with a light adhesive, and with gentle pressure you should be able to lift the screen out. The screen is fragile, but if you take your time it will come out easily. Once it's out, handle it carefully and avoid touching the front side. (unless you want to have to remove your fingerprints later.)
And just one pointer about reassembling this whole thing: don't forget about the power switch. It's little, falls out a lot when the MGB is open, and I have managed to forget about it 3 times in a row now. It's hard to turn the Pocket back on again without it!
Once I get a second pocket as backup I will do a back light mod and document it. Unless Bibin or Palmer decide they want to beat me to it. (hint hint)
