Sega Genesis Built-in Controller

Well I have been looking around the forums and really couldn't find anything on making a built in controller for the sega genesis controllers. I know how some of it is done, like soldering wire to the the right spots, but I can't find any tutorials that actually show how to extend the controller like getting the buttons to work or splitting the controller. Any help will be great.
