What's the hardest portable to build? NOT A NOOB QUESTION!
Moderator: Moderators
So far the only way to play xbox games on the pc is to ftp the actual game files from the xbox ( because a standard drive cant read the format ) and then use a emulator...
The only one i've seen working is Halo (NTSC) but thats kinda gay because you can get the pc version now anyway...

you mean "abomination" of a controller?
If that's the case, the InTV would be the worst!

People tend to overestimate the similarity between Xbox and PC. The hardware components might be standard PC fare but the infrastructure's reasonably different - how many PCs have you seen that boot their OS from ROM? That have a hard disc formatted to FAT-X? That have the weird Nvidia chip directly on the motherboard itself? That have 64Mb of RAM on the mobo? There is no chance of a PC modchip to simply convert it to an XBox...goodie wrote: My Theory:
The Xbox is just a PC. And its games are just PC games. The thing is, there is some sort of protection in the games and system, so they will only work on Xbox. If someone could break this, then they could run the program on a PC. I wouldn't think that you would have to use the same parts. Sure, the games may be optimized for the Xbox's specs, but they ought to work on a similarly powerful PC. I had a laptop or Mini-itx PC in mind.
All computers have something boot before the OS its called BIOS. You replace the BIOS with a Rom Chip that contains the OS and there you go. FATX is just a slittely modded version of FAT, there are hacks to bless the lock from your old Xbox hard drive to a new one under DOS. The Nvidia chip is from what I've heard a custom, but still based off of an exsisting core so it will take some time but not impossible to make sutible replacement driver. Last you said that ram on the motherboard is a rare thing, no it is not, they may have limited the use of onboard ram but it is stil done. The key reason for having the ram on the board is to reduce high and make it look more unlike a PC.Alchemist wrote:People tend to overestimate the similarity between Xbox and PC. If it werent for the DMCA and the fact that Mircrosoft were closed source we could get it to run on the PC. But chances are we wont until like 2010 when they stop supporing 2000.

No you won't, listen to me more carefully. Software equivalents of what you're trying to explain have been tried (Xeon and CXBX) and found to be extremely complex. You're horribly over-simplifying, you can't just treat the minimal Win2k kernal the Xbox uses as some kind of bios replacement. For every different PC configuration you'd need a new driver to accomodate the varying latencies, hardware capabilities etc, and if one part of the machine was deficient in one area (lets say the northbridge-cpu bus was too slow), that would be it: complete incompatibility. It's impossible, more or less.Sparkfist wrote:If it werent for the DMCA and the fact that Mircrosoft were closed source we could get it to run on the PC. The only reason I did it this way is because Ben changed the permissions to keep general users from making polls. (Not blaming Ben in any way.)cennar wrote:to aswer your question DCbicostp wrote:Now before ou go banning me, Noob da noobie noob!
