Mini Joysticks - Ideas Needed!

Hey everyone! I am in the planning stages of a PSone portable, and was wondering if I could use PSP joysticks on it. I know that some people have said that PSP joysticks are really bad for most games - is this true? I have a PSP and it doesn't bother me much.

Yep it is possible, and I agree with you PSP joysticks would be good for PSone portables as they are small and the psone does not require sniping accuracy. But getting It to work is a different story:
we know ( at least I do ) how to hook a PSP joystick up to the ps1 correctly but I haven't been able to get it to work. It could be that I have the wrong pin out but I wont really have the time to check/try different things out with it until the holidays. An up side however is that the PS1/ps2 joysticks seem to work on the same resistance as the PSP ones as Benheck posted a while back that you can use a ps1/ps2 joystick on the psp without any dramas,.

This was covered a few weeks back when I investigated into using PSP joysticks. The PSP joysticks don't register to center properly so aren't much use (this is also documented on the net and YouTube too), also, they don't seem to have much variable resistance between full on and off.

These joysticks are no use.

There are some very flat joysticks you can get, like in the Mad Catz RetroCON controllers, which are far slimmer than normal ones.

Working the other way around on using different joysticks on a PSP is not difficult and will certainly give better results than the stock PSP stick, although of course, any other joystick will need to be external.

Thanks for the info. Bacteria (or anyone for that matter), do you have any experience with the RetroCON? How tall are the joysticks on it? I was hoping to make a PS1p that folds over, so the controls need to be very flat.

Probably. But first, it doesn't look that small, and secondly do you really want to order 1000 joysticks that may or may not be good?

Whoops, sorry, I guess I didn't notice the 1000 minimum order... that would make a difference. Does anyone have ideas for other joysticks? If not, I'll probably just order a RetroCON. Does anyone suggest otherwise?

That looks like the item in question. The joystick is a little wider but instead of being about 22mm tall is is about 6mm tall; the joystick cap is also about 2/3 height. Naturally, if you get a RetroCON then you got two joysticks and two caps, and two rumble motors (small ones). The downside is that it will cost you around $25-$35 a controller as they are rare.

Whilst I found this controller (initially from a car boot sale) for 70p they are rare to get hold of, even on e-bay. One guy had two used ones he wanted £45 including postage, I paid him £30; and a new one as £20 from someone else (didn't get that one). If anyone knows of an alternative controller that uses these joysticks, please let us know (and please PM me!). Normally I pay under £1 for a controller, these ones are expensive!
