He sent me this a while ago...
benheckc wrote:Hello there. I'm sending this to the other mods as well.

I've noticed threads being locked which is actually a good thing because all it takes is one person to post a silly question or bait and get a ton of replies which eats bandwidth everytime someone checks them.

I think we need to crack down on this a bit more. The reason for this is since being Slashdotted in October iPowerweb graciously set my monthly bandwidth limit to 150 gigs, and I paid for 40. Now even without Slashdotting it's over/around 40 pretty much always, but still set at 150 limit.

I think next year's worth of payment is due this month or perhaps April (Soon, at any rate) and I'm not sure how this traffic volume is gonna affect it. Also with tax time coming up (I haven't gotten a return since I was 21, I'm the OTHER kind of tax time person) AND me trying to launch the Phoenix I'm even more aware of costs.

As an alternative what if we did have a donation thing? Such as, people who donate say $10 can start all the BS threads they want (barring the always banned regilion and polictics), other people shut the hell up. (But not in those words :)

Right now I pay about $100 a year for 800 megs storage and 40 gigs transfer, which includes all this forum stuff (I don't think that's bad, maybe I'm wrong. Some guy told me he gets 800 megs and 200 gig transfers for $5/month, but I don't believe that) So even if my bill doubled it'd only take 20 "donaters" to pay for it. Heck, even if the donations covered the cost difference (so I still pay $100 and the rest is donations) I'd be happy.

Usually when I see those Paypal donation buttons on a website I think "what a cheapass" but now... eh my view has changed!

The iPowerWeb guy was gracious about increasing my limit, but I'm pretty sure they're gonna wanna increase my payment anyway since renewal coming's up. As he said "We give people 40 gigs but in most case know they'll never use it. That's why it's cheap" As this is no longer my case, things will certainly change.

Let me know what you think as I'd rather solicite donations than send out out army of "thread censors"

Please send respones via email to benheck@charter.net so I'm more likely to see them. Thanks!

Gannon, how do I assign special titles? Perhaps a person could pick their special title?

At the current rate yearly GB transfer would be 1080 GB. (That's 1 TERABYTE!)

Let's just hope we can get lots of donations then!
In the admin controll panel there is an option at the very bottom called "ranks" Then you just have to assign the ranks to people in the User management area.

This is really the third site I've seen that is (going to) accept donations and in the past I though, who cares. I'll see about scrounging together $10. I like this site, and want to help you out as best I can... though buying your book already should have.

I'll probably end up donating :)....to compensate for whatever amount of money I give, I could always find some yen around my house and exchange it for USD ;)....
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

When i get a job, and have the stuff i need to get first, I'll donate 10 dollars every one in a while.

in another forum there would be a "group: ________" thing.
The spammers would be "group: spammers"
The normal people would be "group: members"
The donating members "group: Donating members"
The Mods "Group: Moderators"

I thought that was cool, it'd work here, like "donater, donating senior member, donating mod"
