DVD Player Screen Help

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

DVD Player Screen Help

Post by Dessel »

Hey everyone. I have a portable DVD Player I got the other day. It does have a Composite input. I even hooked up my PSone through an adapter and it works fine. When I cracked open the player, I found the item number on the LCD. I then found the datasheet for it. According to the sheet, three of its thirty inputs are analog Red, Blue, and Green. Now, I am a bit confused. According to other posts on this site, the player's motherboard always needs to be kept intact. Can I input an RGB signal from the PSone to the screen?

Here is a link to the datasheet:
http://www.inlcd.com/specs/LB070W02-A5.pdf

Page 5 has all of the inputs. 16, 17, and 18 are the ones in question.

Sorry for the double post, but I really need to figure this out before going forward with my project. Does anyone have any ideas about this? Even the smallest bit of help would be very much appreciated!

Can you normally input RGB?
If not, then no.

There's no port for RGB on the DVD player. So that necessarily means that it is not possible?

From that data sheet it looks like those inputs are supposed to come from a lcd driver; there's no mention of video ground or sync signals, so I would presume it's not meant to be driven directly.

Have a look at any chips on the pcb, specifically any that are connected up to the av input, you may get lucky and find that the input encoder accepts RGB or svideo in addition to composite.

Megatron, I don't really know what to look for. Would it help if I uploaded high quality pictures of it so that everyone could see the various boards inside? Or possibly someone could link to a picture of what I am looking for.

Your best bet is to write down the numbers of any chips on the boards and just go searching for datasheets.

A common video encoder that you may just be lucky enough to find is the Sony CX series... see if you've got one of those somewhere on the board.

Megatron, thanks for the help, but I searched every chip and came up with nothing. I will just use the whole board from the DVD player in my portable.

Make a portable that plays DVDs! I've always wanted to do that!

XCVG, that would be really cool! but I don't think that I have enough space for a second disk drive.

What kind of portable are you making?

You could sell it to me and buy a better screen (I am desperate!)

Sell what to you, exactly? If you're looking for a portable DVD player, I'm sure I could sell one to you, assuming Megatron doesn't (wouldn't want to hijack Megatron's potential sale!)

If you mean his WIP portable, nevermind. ;x
what is this i don't even
