Can someone explain DMZ to me?

Post by ghosstt »

I'm talking about DMZ for a router btw, not the line between North and South Korea.

If I were to set up my Wii in a DMZ, it just opens all the the ports to my Wii right? Does it computer, or any computers on my network at harm? (Due to all the open ports) DMZ would also put my Wii at NAT-1 right?

I got my PS3 on DMZ and it has a NAT Type 2 (all required ports open).

DMZ forwards each and every port available to the LAN IP address of your choice. There is no risk to your PCs when you forward them to your Wii. The ports you assigned to the PCs will stay intact.

Then why do some people say it's not a good thing? All open ports create a seamlessly lag free environment no? What's not good about it?

If you have a bunch of ports open then you are more vulnerable to hackers and viruses and stuff.

No, not if you have forwarded them on your Wii.

Unless there are malicious exploits on the Wii (and my PS3) platform, I won't worry about it. DMZ'ing a PC however, is not smart.

Yeah, I had to DMZ my 360, because I kept getting Strict NAT type errors in games when playing them online.

Though my Router, has an option to DMZ a specific MAC address, so I don't have to set a static IP for the 360.

Been working great so far.

I did this with my Wii before, but that was a while back, I havn't sat down, and played the Wii for more than 10min for about a year.

And Ghosst I am the one who imed you on Aim a little while back, and you had no clue who I was, and no recollection that we played SSBB together online.
