Exapinsion/Cartridge Slot

Post by XCVG »

It may seem somewhat dumb to start a new thread for this, but here goes.

The cartridge slot pins use the make contact with the expansion slot pins, which connect to the board. The standard method of removing the expansion slot involves prying it off, then snapping off all the remaining pins that didn't come off. Then you are comitted to a slot relocation.

My question is this: Is there a way to get the expansion off and not require relocating the slot? Is it possible to pry off the slot while leaving the pins largely undamaged? (or am I just clumsy?) Then what do you do? Bend the pins down and solder seems like the most obvious method. Also, what about the pins that inevitably snap off. How do you get the bits out of the board?

Its possible, if you go slow and use a de-soldering iron.

If you want no expansion but need the cart slot right there, just completly remove it, and the pins, then bend then n64's cart slot pins over and solder them onto the contacts. Works great.

Yes, that is what I did, but then I fried my n64. I put it in a box.

and yeah, none of the pins ever do break off if you do it right. You just have to take the grounding off first, then the black part pulls right off and you can solder straight to the pins if you want a large area to solder to.

Hah, I guess I was just too clumsy and rough when I removed mine. And that's pretty cool that you can just bend the pins. It occured to me but I thought they would be too short and brittle.

Thanks!

Actually, ShockSlayer reccommends that when you are removing the pins, that you just bend them with your fingers and they snap off. However, when I attempted this I cut my fingers up. Try at your own risk. I can guarantee that the pins will last one bend though if that is the course of action you want to take.
