SS's board trimming is probably as small as you can make it go, however Ashwin, unless you know what you are doing and good at soldering, don't try it, it needs skill to pull it off.

Re: Portable N64 help
that battery wont work. the n64 needs over 7.2 volts. however, if you get another battery just like it, and wire them in series, it would give you 4250mah @ 7.4 volts, which would work. that would run your portable for about 3 hours, assuming you are using a led modded psone screen.

Re: Portable N64 help
When you get experienced you can worry about trimming boards or fitting systems into tight cases; when you start, don't be too concerned about this, fit your case into what's around/convenient. You can easily make your own case, perspex and wood make reasonable cases, until you get experienced and move onto other methods if you choose to.

Re: Portable N64 help
I doubt that you will be able to fit a n64p in an AG85 case. You should try the ZN-45.

Re: Portable N64 help
Do most of you people hook the screen and the system to the same batteries? Does anyone have two separate batteries, like, one for the n64 and one for the screen?samjc3 wrote:that battery wont work. the n64 needs over 7.2 volts. however, if you get another battery just like it, and wire them in series, it would give you 4250mah @ 7.4 volts, which would work. that would run your portable for about 3 hours, assuming you are using a led modded psone screen.
Also, does anyone actually PLAY with their portables? Don't get me wrong, making these good old systems handheld is awesome, but I imagine that they don't really get much playtime... Do they?
The best Screen name is one that has no Google matches

Re: Portable N64 help
While using separate batteries has been done (Ben mentioned doing that on one of his early systems), it is the norm to use one battery or series of batteries to power their portable.Squidlekins wrote:Do most of you people hook the screen and the system to the same batteries? Re: Portable N64 help
It's a general practice if your screen and system need two different voltages to get a battery that will handle the higher one and then regulate it down to what the other needs. For example, many screens will work with 7.4v but a system like SNES needs 5v. Get a battery that's 7.4v and then use a linear or switching regulator to drop the voltage to 5v - one battery, two voltages. Get it?
Although I do spend a lot more time building portables than playing, I still play on my SuperBoy several times a week.
@Ashwin: It is possible to fit an N64 into an AG-85 case, but you will need to trim some of the N64's board on both sides and top and bottom. It involves finding alternate pins for the controller inputs. Also, if you are using a PSOne/Zenith screen, you will have to replace the backlight with LEDs and chop the screen up in every way possible to get it small enough to leave room for the system's controls. Oh, and it would probably be best to relocate the Jumper/Expansion Pak while you're at it, too. Overall I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner, but if you're up for a project that will last you a good long while it is not impossible.
