Could Someone Explain Torrenting to me? I know that you can get software with it but want to know more.

Don't get software off BitTorrent. If it's commercial software, it's illegal. Even if it's not commercial software, there's a good chance it's full of viruses.

Its a way to transfer large amounts of data to many places without putting a huge load on just a few central servers. So you have user A who has the whole file (lets say an .iso of a linux distro), while users B and C want to download it. B gets half of the files, C gets the other half of the files, and then they share those with each other. Then A only has to upload once and 2 other people get the file. This is a very simplified scenario. Pretty much you have users called "seeds" who have the file, and users that don't that are called "peers". The peers download data from the seeds and share with the other peers.

Torrenting a good form of downloading but takes a while depending on seed to peer ratio.

not that anyone does, but try not to download obvious viruses or commercial software. I suggest pirate bay or mininova there servers are set in Saudi Arabia so its quite legal. HOWEVER it may not be legal in your country or state.

Torrenting is full of viruses. And illegal software. And pirated stuff. Also some useful, legal, clean stuff.

In any case, get a decent client and a decent antivirus/antimalware suite.

If you want to download stuff you shouldn't, then a far safer method than using torrents is to Google search what you are looking for, have programs like McAfee SiteAdviser, Finjan and WOT working in the background - on the Google results, if you get green on all of the results then the site is clean, as are the links and the downloads. Then, it is a far better chance that your files will not be infected; then use virus scanners to check the files are fine. In contrast, downloading off a torrent is far far riskier through the whole process.

I learned from experience. I will never download/torrent anything. Ever again. NOthing like viruses and a whole bunch of illegal crap dropped on your hard drive due to some kid with too much time on his hands. Plus the stuff that wasn't virused was only half there. Nothing like downloading a program that is only the .EXE and has none of the supporting files....

I'd argue that it depends on the torrent site. I generally avoid TPB for this reason, but there are many respectable private sites that have no tolerance for junk and will lay the smackdown.
