Buy a keg with pop tabs?

Post by Tromoly4130 »

So I've been collecting pop tabs (the thingys on soda cans) and putting them into a milk jug, my way of collecting cans but even lazy-er. A buddy said something about if you fill a jug in this way, you'll get enough money to buy a keg of "milk" (as Ben'd say). Wondering if it's true, I'm putting it to the test. For simplicity I'm using a solid mass, which will be more dense than a container of pop tabs.

First, the density of aluminum is 2.7 grams/cubic centimeter. This is important.

One gallon is equivelent to 3.785 liters, and 100 cubic centimerets are in a liter, so there are 3785 cm^3 in a gallon.

There are 454 grams in a pound, this is needed for scrap prices.

So, take 2.7/454 to get pounds, then multiply by 3785 to get total weight in a gallon, which equals 22.5 pounds.

Now, based off of scrapindex.com, beverage aluminum is going for $0.17 / lb. if it's under a truckload. So, take 22.5 times 0.17, and you get a whopping $3.80 / milk jug.

At this rate, you'd be lucky to get a case for a jug, nevermind a keg. Myth busted

Also, with the way the tabs are shaped, there's no way to fully fill it with aluminum. You're bound to have some air in there, too, which reduces the aluminum weight. Cool read, though.

The family crushes every aluminum can and puts it in a 55 gallon drum. When it gets topped, it goes to the recycler to cash in. Used to get about $40 for them....
