N64 keeps resetting

Post by goodie »

Lately my N64 keeps resetting by itself. It usually happens after playing for half an hour or so. Also, the picture looks slightly flickery, like the refresh rate is too low or something. The flickering gets worse just a few moments before it resets.
I thought it might be overheating, but it doesn't feel warm at all. I also opened it up and cleaned out all the dust, but that didn't help either.
Anyone know what might be the problem?

Use thicker wires for the positive and negative battery wires; preferably rated about 3 amps. It my be that you have enough amps for the system to run normally, just, but with a tiny bit of extra load it shuts off; may also explain the slightly flickery screen too. I remember on my first N64 system, it sometimes turned on sometimes didn't, sometimes rebooted - issue then was I was only using general purpose wiring not decent stuff.

Oh, this is just my regular N64. I'm not portablizing it or anything. I guess I should've said that before.

I looked at the capacitors, and none of them were bulging or leaking. Is there any other way to tell if a cap is bad?

Remember that buying a new n64 is not completely out of the question, you can buy a new n64 for $8 ($7 shipping) as a replacement. It doesn't come with any cables or controllers or even the jumper pak. It's just a core system. Sometimes it has the jumper pak cover but if you buy the same color as the one you have now then that's no big deal.

It does sound pretty lame when saying just go out and buy a new one but yeah, the n64 mobo is really touchy.

EDIT: sorry I actually forgot to say ebay, Just search buy it now consoles lowest price first.

Before resorting to getting a new N64, I thought it might be worth trying a different ac adapter. So I bought one and so far, the problem seems to be gone. :)

Maybe it was a bad capacitor. Just in the power supply.

Today, after having the N64 console for 3 years in a box I finally connect it and turn it on, then I noticed that after a few seconds turned OFFand ON by itself, (was not doing that 3 years ago when I stopped using it BTW). So I started figuring out ways to get this thing fixed.
First I change the game cartridge, kept resetting.
Then I tried taking out the Expansion Pak and putting it back in, still nothing happened
After this I took it out and inserted the Jumper Pak and it worked!!!
Then I put back in the Expansion Pak, played for like 30 minutes or so, and then….AGAIN STARTED RESETTING IT SELF!!!!! DAMN!!!!!
That’s my story so far….
I’m going to try to get those Nintendo console screwdrivers so I can start looking inside for the CAP…
