Reflowing a GPU.

Does anybody have a good guide/tips? I have a laptop that I have up on a while back, after reading that a common problem with the fan algorithm caused it to overheat and kill the GPU. Now, a few weeks ago, I actually got it to start up! That was the only time, though, but it was long enough to throw the data on it onto a flash drive.

Reading up on fixing 360s, I am finding it a lot harder to believe it is really dead, as the internet and HP tech support tell me. ESPECIALLY since I got it working one time, out of the blue, no changes before or after. Thus, I am going to try and reflow the BGA solder job, since that seems to be the most likely culprit.

It is an HP/Compaq DV6000, has an nvidia 7200, I believe.

well... i personally haven't done this to a laptop... however i have done this technique to many RRoD 360 consoles... heatguns can be great.

just get a new one man, pretty sure you are covered under HPs recall.

@FadedDelta: Thanks for the link, though I had seen it before. I was hoping people here had extra insight.

I called HP a few times, and though the laptop did get a warranty extension, it is up by about 3 weeks from when I called. Kinda sucks.

recall is different than warranty extension.

To get the recall, you had to return in within a certain period. Past that, they will not take them back.
