I'm thinking about a PS2 laptop as my next project (probably just mains power, not a true portable) and am interested in the size of the slimline motherboard if anyone has the measurements to hand.
One other thing I was wondering, is it possible as it is with the Xbox, to remove the optical drive once you have a modchip installed? I figure that using a 2.5" laptop drive and installing all the games to that instead should cut down the size and weight somewhat.
PS2 (Slimline) board size / Removal of optical drive?

That'd make it so much heavier, the PStwo's disc drive is teeny and soo light.
and from what I know, the Pstwo doesn't have the port on the back to accept a Harddrive, may be wrong though.

Surely that drive takes up way more space than a tiny little laptop drive? You'd need to keep the motor, tray/lid mechanism and the controller. I'm just holding a 40GB 2.5" drive in my palm here and I'd be amazed if it was over 100g in weight.
Regarding the IDE connection, up to the v12, the solder points are still available on the pcb, just not connected to anything.

That's the DVD drive, well except for the joystick grafted onto it. Trust me, it's tiny.

The motherboard is 8.1" x 5.5"
basically the footprint of the PS2 minus the thickness of the walls. That extra lip that extends passed the footprint on the right is really just clearance for the DVD.

Ignore the heat sinks smashed down on the left. I'm testing.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Re: PS2 (Slimline) board size / Removal of optical drive?
How tall is the main board?
I am designing a ps2 laptop to be powered by 3-4 Li-Po batteries that I use for my RC cars, (Each is 5000 Mah)
And I plan on using a 15.4 inch lcd desktop monitor and to make it thin, I will put the control boards next to the ps2, and the batteries either next to it also, or under if there is no room... Thanks,
