DS Lite issue, possible ribbon cable, difficult fix?

Post by jperryss »

Hi all,
I'm having trouble with my DS lite. It will only turn on if I have the screen clicked back to second-lock (both halves parallel) and apply slight pressure backwards on the top screen. As soon as a I release pressure, it shuts off. If I try to power it up normally, the power light comes on, the bottom screen flashes once, then the unit shuts off.

Based on what I've read so far, I think it may be the ribbon cable that connects the bottom and top halves of the unit.

Has anyone replaced this before, and how difficult is it to replace? Supposedly DealExtreme carries replacements but I could not find them on their site. The ones I found on eBay are for the DS Phat only. Any help is appreciated. And no, I don't want to buy a DSi. :D

Thanks!

I've done it for phats, but never for slims. It's pretty easy. According to a few reviews on DE, the slim doesn't have just the ribbon cable, you'll need the entire top screen. I've never seen inside a slim, so I can't verify that.

She's right, you have to get a new screen from what I can see.

I bet your ribbon cable is just loose. Try opening it up and taking a look.

Thanks for the help guys.

I took it apart tonight and there's visible damage to the ribbon cable (though I may have made it a bit worse when I pulled it apart). The replacement cable+screen is about $11 through DE. Looks like I'll be ordering a couple. :x :x :x

This is probably beyond my skill level, but what the heck, it never stopped me before.
