NES in a 360 shell (just started)

Post by Biased »

So today I decided it was high time I finally get my NES opened up. The screws were all stripped so I couldn't use a screwdriver to get it open... at least not the way I wanted to (I put a flathead on the seam between the top and bottom half where the screw posts were and hammered away until the plastic on the bottom half broke off :D).

So now that the original case is mostly ruined (and also because I found something far sweeter and bigger to put the guts into), I no longer plan on putting a screen and controls into the top half of the case and instead into the shell of a 360 that I bought broken to play around with. I'm not sure what I'm going to get for a screen, but once I get it I'll be able to start working on the mostly-external design in Illustrator. In the mean time I'll be looking for the other parts, doin' research and getting hold of a desoldering iron since the school finally made me return the one I took during one of my senior classes.

So what do you guys think? Any objections? Suggestions, requests? Do tell.

EDIT: Can anyone measure the width and height of a PSOne or Zenith screen for me? It would be useful for reference before I start working in Illustrator and to know if I should try a bigger screen.
EDIT: I plan to use the power button from the 360 for power to the NES and the Screen and the location of the sync button hooked to a tact switch for reset and the USB door will be the location for controller 2 (the first player controls are going to go on the system, planning to make it hand-holdable). If I don't do any of that (i.e. I get lazy, which will most likely happen), I'm just going to put the Power/Reset Buttons where the Memory card slots are and put the power indicator LED where it is on the 360.

It's nice that there's going to be a lot of working room inside of the shell, I'll just need to find a way to balance the weight so it doesn't feel wonky while you hold it. I'm also planning on cutting and doing some bondo work on the shell to integrate grooves to conform to the hands so it's easier to hold. I may do it after I complete the system though. I've never used a soldering iron lower than the 40W one I had from my school. Does anyone know how well a 30W iron and a solder sucker would work for desoldering?

Make it look like a stock 360. Have a Ring Of Light that works as a power button. Hide the cart slot behind the disc door. Make the controllers plug in via USB (is that even possible?). Use original power and AV ports (just buy someone's busted box for $20). Use the original power supply. Maybe even put a fake HDD on top.
